Question! Have Proof/Arsenal stamps on butt of grips. Any idea what they stand for, or does someone recognize them?

L:

Thanks for posting your numbers and pics. From the Victory Database we can estimate that your Victory was likely shipped from the factory in the June, 1943 time frame.

I do not recognize the W-within-the-star marking and am unable to offer you an opinion on its significance. It is not a marking that I recall having seen before on Victories or, indeed, on any other USGI weapon. Are your stocks serial numbered to the gun? Any import markings?

No import marks on her, and no ser# on grips. I also have seen numerous depot/arsenal markings due to my job as an ammo QC, thats why I asked, it wasn't anything I'm familiar with.

L:

I don't think the marking would have been applied by a US military depot, arsenal or other non-factory rebuild facility. Marking the bottom of the stock, which is easily removable, rather than the frame would not be an effective way of establishing that a given task had been performed.

Since there is no matching serial on the stocks we can fairly conclude that they are not the revolver's original stocks.

My guess is that the star marking is indicative of either some foreign military use or perhaps it is a property marking for some domestic law enforcement agency that had the Victory in its inventory at some time in its history.

Sorry I could not be of more assistance on this one.

Regards,
Charlie

Charlie, Thats OK, I appreciate all your assistance! What caught me as strange to those marks was the fact that they are recessed stampings into the wood, not ink stampings.

Greetings. Just a thought- That squiggly stuff under the star, is it a word? In English? If not, could it be Cyrillic? Were Victories supplied to Russia?

Cheers,

Mark

Its not cyrillic, its a W line over a 5, then right next to it is a larger A along with the M inside the star. I'm still looking for info for these markings.
