Any known reason for an apparent shortage of Shields?

Most of the manufacturers only sell to dealers through a distributor like RSR, Sport South, or Chattanooga Shooting Supply. It takes time for product to move through these layers of distribution.
Our store just got some Rugers from the regular distributors & they are dated last week. Also, when we get Shields, they are less than 10 days old. GARY

A lot or should I say nearly all of those posting in one of the Shield threads have test fire dates that are 2-4 weeks prior to their purchase date. It is odd to find one that appears to have sat around for a while!

That makes sense to me that they would start appearing at the gun stores about 2-4 weeks after their test fire dates. That is what I have found to be true when I purchased a M&P 15, a M&P 15-22, and a M&P 40c earlier this year.
I recently ran into a listing that listed several 40 Shields for sale at an attractive price. When I inquired about the test fire date, I was told that it was 5 months ago. This was not the first time that I have run into this. That just strikes me as strange since the Shield is such a hot selling commodity right now. It seems that since they are in demand that they would be snapped up right away instead of sitting around for several months. I know that my local gun shop has been trying for several months to get Shields in stock with no success, and then there are dealers that have several in stock that have evidently been sitting around somewhere for months. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong there, but I would normally rather buy one that was just recently manufactured. Maybe I'm just being too particular.

I didn't read every post here so, I apologize if this has been said...

The short answer is, popularity. The gun was advertised well and was in demand before it ever hit the shelves.

You may find an old one for sale, maybe 4 or 5 months old.

Perhaps the seller tried to get $600 or more for it at a couple gun shows before he realized he better take what he can get and price it reasonably.

Look at Magpul mags: They were selling for $50 to as much as $80 each! Some guys may very well have bought high and then held that high price hoping to recoup their investment.

Some guys hope to find a buyer that hasn't realized the prices have dropped.

I went into an Academy Sporting Goods on 9/13 and asked for a Shield. He said they didn't have any because "they have all been recalled". I asked if it was because of the possible discharge when they were dropped and he said yes. Maybe there are rumors and scuttlebutt among big box store employees just like there are online, but that was what I was told anyway. He didn't know when they'd have any back in.

I can tell you this...they're backed up. My gun went in for repair, and is being replaced. The CS rep told me that I could expect a 2-3 week wait for a gun, before they had one to ship to me...and then he reiterated, at least 2-3 weeks.

When I asked why, his comment was, "well, you're not the only one waiting for a gun." So, I'm guessing that S&W has a backlog of replacement requests.

It will be almost three months before I get my hands on my gun again...that I purchased in July of this year.

So, it appears, unfortunately so, that I sent my gun in for repair at the same time they were having a Safety Alert / recall and in the midst of fixing the trigger safety issue.

Oh well, it'll be here when it gets here. They were closed for two weeks right after i got the gun, so that delayed shipment, then the wait for the shipping label, then three weeks at S&W before I found out that it was going to be replaced, and now this.

It would be faster, if they gave me a refund, and I went out to gun broker and bought one.

Just FYI.

Lot of rumors I guess. I stopped into a store last Thursday as I have been waiting for months. The guy behind the desk told not to expect soon. He said S&W recently got several orders in from State PD's for M&P's and they have basically put all resources to the making full size M&P line to meet these orders. Who knows.

I bought mine from an Academy Sporting Goods 2 days after the "Recall".

There were 7 for sale on here this weekend, I bought one. As far as know, there still are 3 for sale from ARBlack. What shortage?

There could be something to that. S&W did just get that contract to supple 13k M&Ps to the LA Sheriff Department.

That sounds like it may be a major factor!

BTW, Yes some shields can be found; on GB at elevated prices, some at good prices like in our "for sales" forum, but not at my LGS (They haven't had one come in about several weeks.) The On line stores that had great prices have been "out of stock" for some time now.

I'm sure that this could also be a contributor. Unless they have dedicated production facilities for each model, and I'd be surprised if they do, they run production batches out of the same fabrication facility, switching out models as demand dictates.

I was just in the local Shoot Straight yesterday, & they had both the 9mm, & 4o SW versions later. GARY
