I had some time to kill on my way to the airport before my trip to Tucson a couple weeks ago and saw this Performance Center 686-5 at Cabelas in Scarborough that I have to admit has been in my head ever since I saw it. It is a 7-shot, unfluted cylinder with some kind of an interchangable weight system possibly? At least I think thats what it is. I'm not sure if it's cut for moon clips or not and I can't find the gun in the Standard Catalog. But it does look like a really cool gun. If anyone of you have one and could tell me a little about it and how you like it I would sure appreciate it. Scarboroughs about a 1:45 minute drive from my house and I hate to drive down just to look at it again. But once I get something in my head sometimes it's hard to get it out! The price does seem quite high as Cabelas always does, the want $1200 but sometimes they will negotiate and I've got a 4013 TSW that I've been thinking of trading away.......Opinions anyone?

So I jumped in my truck and drove the 1 hour 45 minutes to Cabelas today to check this out. Headed for the gun library. Two guys were working but neither one seemed to want to work with me. I waited about half an hour and another customer came in with some guns to trade. The salesman ignored me and went right over to help him out and disappeared into the back room to see what his guns were worth. I stuck my head in the door and told them that I was interested in the PC 686 and was told that they were backed up right now and they would be with me as soon as they could. I was tempted to leave right then but I had driven all the way down so I figured I would hang around a little longer. About that time another customer came in with 4 rifles he wanted to sell. Once again I was ignored and he was helped right out, and once again the salesman disappeared into the back room with his guns. By now I'm getting pretty annoyed, and I figured I would give them about 15 more minutes and then I was leaving. About 13 minutes later one of the salesman finally came out to see what I wanted, but you could tell by his attitude that I was just an annoyance. The funny thing is that I had every intention of bringing this gun home with me! So I checked it out, the gun was in great shape, but it was used. It was not in the original PC case, it was in a generic blue plastic case with a broken latch and had no papers or accessories. I pointed these things out and told them that at $1200, which I figure was beyond top dollar, the gun should be anib which this gun clearly was not. They were not interested in any negotiations whatsoever and the whole incident left me with some pretty negative feeling towards Cabelas and I can say that I will probably never go back.

That is a handsome pistol, big price tag or not. Did you by chance get the serial # to contact the PC directly for info?

I didn't even take it out of the case and look at it as I was just killing time before my flight. Thats why I don't have much info. I called Cabelas today and wasn't able to get much out of the salesman other than it was a 7-shot, when I asked him if it was cut for moon clips his response was that "it's a .357!" But it was in my mind during my vacation and I am intrigued. I talked myself out of driving down today but tomorrows another day and I sure to like revolvers.

I have the light hunter which kind of looks like this. This version has the removable barrel weights...$1200 sounds really high...

This one is of 1994 vintage and is the 'Competitor' model. It does have a weight system housed within the underlug and the weights can be shifted for balance, they can also be removed to lighten.

It has a great action job from the factory and is an absolute, and I really mean this, tack driver.

If I could find more of these, I would buy more. This one was bought new from 'old stock' in the box with all paper for $1,100 in 2005. (Of course that's in California.) So your $1,200 doesn't seem too much to me.

The cylinder is not original, although I do have it. I sent this back to the factory for the unfluted to be installed....just like the look better and it's a tad easier to clean.

Hogue Big-Butt stocks and a Leupold dot sight tube to top.

(Sorry for my crummy photo taking skills.)

I know that there is another model, or two, that has the same style, but that name escapes me right now. I'm sure that someone else will chime in though.

Page 363, top left corner, of the Supica S&W bible has some info on the Competitor model. No photo though.

I saw the listing for the Competitor in "the book", but that is listed as a fluted cylinder with an integral scope mount, like in the pics socal s&w posted above, (he said that he had the unfluted cylinder installed), neither of which this gun has. So I figured this was something different.

Thats the first one I ever seen with the 'windows' cut in the side of the underlug. I would prefer that be solid.

Yes, it is a 'Competitor' and it is rare and a superb and accurate shooter. That's also the going price for one. I love mine. Dave
