Gratuitous effort to increase post count.

(see what you started ;))

You mean like this :D

Sir, you left out the part where you launched many a lifeboat to search for those who had been summarily cast adrift into the dark night sea....
I had you and Giz, and some others that I had seen banned in mind from day one.
It was actually Dave that thought up the general amnesty for the entire list except known trolls or troublemakers of one sort or another.

And I for one, am grateful to you Lee.

Certainly not a troll, but as for troublemaker, well, I've tried to amend my ways and do no worse than my lawyer from Louisiana! .... :)

That's right-
Don't blame the IT Guy! :D

I suppose everyone missed the part about Dave successfully transferring our data from Groupee to here, especially the part about that had never been done successfully before.

I didn't miss that part. Did you miss the part where I said "Bravo for getting the remaining (non-trimmed) data moved"? That was intended as a sincere compliment.

For those that don't know who Groupee (now Social Strata) is: Social Strata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I was going to type out the long and detailed story of just what a difficult and worrisome time buying this board was.
Instead, I'll just go with the abridged version.
I was offered the board in a phone call. I had to commit at that moment, or parabellum, the former owner threatened to:
"shut it down, delete the content, and close the Groupee account to get this monkey off my back."
He was fed up.
So, I bought it.
I instantly changed the tone and The Rules to shut down the "Wild West" and change this board to one of the most civil on the net. The pushback and complaining were heavy and constant.
There was NO Moderator staff left in place when I took over. I also had to deal with burying my only sibling the first week I owned the board after a 5 week illness.
I'm not a computer or IT guy. I had 15 minutes of instruction the day I took over. I learned by examining the controls and through trial and error. The following 6 months are just a blur of 14-18 hour days of stress, work, and outgoing cash. For about 2 years, being self employed allowed me to devote the majority of my time to this board. It also allowed me to incur nearly $200,000 in debt between the actual expenses/purchase and loss of income over those two years.

So, YES, I pruned content for a 4 month period (out of the total 12+ years) till we could get it moved to a more economical host. In case you care, the exorbitant hosting fee I was paying would go up by 91% when the total posts reached 275,001.
NO pruning or deleting has been done since, and no content of any value will ever be pruned again.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Maybe it wasn't clear from what I posted, but I did try to differentiate between the enormity of what happened before your watch and the compartively minor number of deletions that took place under your ownership. I wasn't aware of all of the details, nor did I understand the extent of sacrifice that took place on your part.

Foresight?
Pal, if I had foresight, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
This board wouldn't be here.
I would not have given years of my time and most of a gun and grip collection to save this board and put up with your (and similar) whining and armchair quarterbacking.

Those were the choices you made based on your unique circumstances and I do appreciate that the net result was that this forum didn't dissapear. Apologies if the word "foresight" touched a nerve, but the bulk of what I posted (regarding foresight) was directed at the former owner.

So, here we are, at where we are today.
I'd suggest just getting over it, and moving forward from here.
Or, you could go moan to parabellum about all the valuable data he deleted. He is readily available on the Sig forum. SIGforum.com --A discussion forum for SIG enthusiasts
Lemme know how that goes. :D
Or, you can put YOUR money where your mouth is, and trot on over to Internet Archive Wayback Machine and get all that data into a form we can upload into an archive cheaply and easily and we'll be glad to do it. ;)
Get with Dave on that. He's the IT Guy. I can't fix much. :D

I have little interest in the Sig Forum (or Sigs), nor talking to parabellum about that which cannot be undone now.

Since I'm not the owner of the data where it resides or the site where it was archived from, I can't just trot over to the Wayback Machine to recover your data. As the Wayback Machine represents snapshots of a website crawled on a particular day and time, I'm not sure how much data is actually available from the 239 snapshots that they did take. The point of posting the link was that some here might find what is archieved there of interest.

Don't feel obligated to respond.
I don't really care if you ever share your vast knowledge here again. ;)

There.
That was cathartic.
I needed that.
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Glad you feel better now. Sorry, if I offended. That was never my intention.

So class:

How many posts were deleted on during "The Great Post Count Flush Job"????

NONE.

Did everyone get that? NONE.

"Little Johnny, can you tell the class now many NONE is?" "Yes teacher, NONE is equal to Zero, Zilch, NADA, Nothing, Bupkis, NOT ONE."

Your remarks are very condescending. I realize you're irritated and want to set the record straight, which you have. But the way you have explained this is obnoxious and provocative. I personally could care less about a post count, but you'rer response is unexpectedly rude and not what I expect from a FORUM ADMINISTRATOR...at all.

Lee, thanks for shearing what Paul Harvey always called "The Rest of The Story" about our forum. I had only a vague idea of what was going on behind the scenes back then. I knew there was a lot of changes going on, but as a member who read a lot more than I posted, I could only guess as to what was happening.

With my original post of this thread, I was refering only to the post COUNT number, not content. One thing about the old site that was, to me, very offputting (is that a real word?) was the political 'food fights' & 'potty mouthing' that I thought distracted from very informative discourse. I was with you all the way when you rectified that. I know that you took a lot of heat for that back then, but I think most all of the members were glad for your determination to change it for the better, & it certainly has.

Also, when you allowed some of the banned members to be reinstated by living with your rules, some of the best & most intresting posters returned to keep this the intresting & knowlegeable forum that it is today. This is without a doubt, the best site on the web.

ain't no thang...

What V-35 said...I agree. I'll take the forum as it stands today as compared to back in time and the way it was.

"Tusker10mm" is an old time forum member I missed when he was smacked away for righteously disagreeing with the power that once was. I think he is back now after the pardon but under a different forum name (as his actual name.)

Yup, that's me, obnoxious and provocative, you left out offensive. That is why they don't let me out much. Sorry you were offended, it wasn't directed at you.

This topic has been sliced and diced 100's of times in the last three years. The sticky covers it all rather completely. Yet somehow once again we are talking about it and folks who have not taken the time to become educated are spreading false and inaccurate information. Sometimes it takes a 2x4 to get the donkeys attention.

The thread that covers the topic (its not a "sticky", BTW) is near the bottom of the Announcement & Rules forum. In the 3 years and 26 days that this particular thread has been in existance, it has received 3,961 views from a membership of 103,021 people. Not exactly in the forefront of most folks mind. The fact that we are now four days and three pages in to discussing the subject before you decided to take a 2x4 to the donkeys, only reinforces the point that most posting here were likewise not aware of the true reason there was a "post count flush".

Reminds of that famous line from Cool Hand Luke...

"What we've got here is a failure to communicate."

I think I am guilty of using the word "deleted", but I should add to that, long ago I got over the loss. Until now, with this thread, it never really crossed my mind that the word might not be accurate. So my apologies if I offended anyone.
I would like to add my personal thanks for those lifeboats, even though I was not (yet) among those set adrift. My friends were though. More luck at tongue-biting (or keyboard supression) than some others is all.

I've never really cared about post counts ... those that have been here awhile know who to pay attention to and who not to.

Post count doesn't indicate knowledge IMO.

I do want to say how appreciative I am to have Lee as the owner and controller of this forum. I won't go into detail about the past owner, but a lot of good people were banned and should not have been.....it was not a good situation.

We all have access to a "great" forum as it is today and I for one am very glad to have a place to visit where the discussions are civil and informative ...sometimes humorous.

Whatever. Most of the members here couldn't care less about your post count, or what happened to it 3 years ago.

I guarantee you this topic will come up again, and similarly there will be members who pass on their "wisdom" of perfect hindsight and let us all know how it should have been done. You know the type.

I'll just put that 2x4 right over here to keep it handy.
