Anyone have a 629?

I have an opportunity to get a 629 5" in a decent trade. Never been fired, lock version the owner claims. I don't have a long barreled 44Mag and was thinking it might fit the bill even though I'm not really in the market either. Just posted an item in trade and wanted to see what I'd get offered. He at least has my interest with a Smith. Read a bit on the 629s, but thought I'd come to the source to hear your input anyways.

I had a 629 Classic with a 5 inch barrel. It was a great gun with a very nice factory action. I recently sold it so I could buy some other Smiths. Very accurate and reliable. The lock didn't bother me at all because it was a shooter. The gun was 12 years old and a guy happily paid me $800 for it. I'm sure I will miss that gun.

THE 5" M629 IS A VERY WELL BALANCED, AND VERSATILE REVOLVER. IF YOU CAN LIVE WITH THE DISFIGURING IL, THEN I WOULD JUMP ON IT. ALL THE 629s ARE GREAT SHOOTERS, IMHO…..

No photo, but I've got a 6" with combats that replaced my original 629 (that I foolishly sold) this one is going to my kids/Grand kids. Jagrmaister, I don't know what you're trading but I would sure get that 629.

Yes I've got a 629. Only one though.

Thanks for letting me share,

Sorry no pic, but glad to be part of the 629 club. I bought a new 629-4 6" some time back. It came with the goodyears, so I bought some nice wood for it to dress it up a bit. Nice looking 629's guys.

Next gun on my list.. want an older blued 29 with 8" barrel.. maybe throw an unfluted cylinder on it or something but def a square wood grip and partial lug

I think the other party has faded to black on me. He was admittedly a collector but I think he overpaid as another Smith he offered he was into for $100 more (proven receipt) Than i can get NIB from the LGS. Think he thought I'd give him a premium. Oh well, Thanks for the info guys and I'll keep looking for my next Smith.

Keep looking, you will find one. I just came across this one a few weeks ago and purchased it Monday. I prefer the older makes when the internals were still forged steel. You get way better quality and if your lucky, you pay less than retail for a new version.

This 3" is an absolute joy. It is also my very first S&W revolver. All my others are Colts.
