Looking to possibly add a 4" Model 66-5 to the humble collection. I know it has the MIM parts and frame mounted firing pin. But I am looking for a good accurate shooter with less bulk than my 6" 686-4. As I may even use it for informal bullseye where I would shoot it one handed.

If anyone has ever tested 66-5 accuracy how good does yours shoot? Would $400 in good shape with box be a good price? Thanks in advance!

That would be a excellent price if you can find one. I paid $625 for a 66-4 4" that is a safe queen. The accuracy, other than my model 10 the 66 is the most accurate gun I own.
Good luck,

The 66-5 will stack up with anything in the accuracy dept. It does recoil more with full loads than your 6" 686; it's also lots easier to carry hidden on your hip. I would not sell my 66-5 for anywhere near $400, wouldn't be tempted even at $600. Great variation of the model! You'll love it.

update!

Thanks to all those who replied! I enjoyed the pics too. Anyway I won the auction on the 66-5!

I hope it looks as good as it does in the pics. Hopfully it will be here next weekend - time to load some ammo!

Congrats! Nice looking 66 you have there. Let us know how it shoots! Regards 18DAI.

I have a 66-5 with 2.5" barrel. Possibly one of the best S&W revolvers I've ever owned. The only complaint I had was the Uncle Mike's boot grip, it was horrible on my hand.

I also have the same as you but -3.
Mine wear the original service grips with a Tyler T Grip, perfect for my hand.

PS Never and I mean NEVER sell a 66.

Here's my 66-5 I got last week. Sorry for the quality of the pic. Not bad for $345 including ammo too.

I strongly concur with labworm!!! Even though I did not enjoy shooting my 66 2.5 very much, mainly because I don't think I had the proper grips for it.

It was a beautiful pistol and I regret to this day for selling it.

When I sold it I did not know S&W had discontinued it and added the IL!

While I'm at it I also regret selling my 649 (38 Special) years ago!!

I will have to agree with you Skip on the proper grips for the 2.5". Since the photo I've changed to the pachmayr grips which gives me a better grip for shooting. The wood is a beauty though.

I'll make you feel better, sold my NIB, purchased by myself in 1990. Colt Detective Special, still bothers me to this day.:D

It is difficult to be unhappy with a M66 of any length. I have both 3 & 4" versions, am now questing for a 2.5". Too bad they didn't make a 5". That would be the cat's meow.
