Anyone qualified under HR218?

In my state, the interpretation is that you must qualify with the agency that you retired from. When you qualify, you are given a sticker to put on your ID card that indicates that you qualified.

Kenny B,
Annual qualification is required, but the course of fire is left up to the states. You can go to the LEAA web site and get the details;
http://www.leaa.org/218/index.html

I'd be interested in finding a location in NC that would qualify retired LEOs. My old agency
(think: Capital City) is so afraid of liability issues of having non-sworn personnel at the range that they have evidently decided to 'not get involved'.

Furthermore it is not necessary for a qualified law enforcement officer to obtain a CCW/CHL. There is no such thing as reciprocity for a federally qualified LEO or retired LEO under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004. Legally such a person can carry in any locality, NYC included. But I would not try it.

Word of warning, I doubt that most law enforcement officers know about this.

I agree on the CCW but I keep mine because of the possiblity of a run in with a LEO that doesn't know about LEOSA and, since I live in KY, dealers don't have to call in a new gun purchase for the background check.

The rest of what your saying confuses me though. It may be just the way you typed it but thats the whole reason LEOSA is what it is. LEOs all over the US can carry wherever without worrying about restrictions (for the most part). Including NYC, D.C., Hawaii, etc.

Tn Dept of Corrections Officers are allowed to carry off duty once they are "Vested" with 5 years service and are then considered LEO's. We have annual qual with service weapons, .38, .40, 12ga and .223. There is nothing stating what type of weapon may be carried off duty.

...(I keep my CCDW because)since I live in KY, dealers don't have to call in a new gun purchase for the background check.

For your information, the BATF has advised me the Kentucky LEOSA CCDW as issued to LEO retirees would ALSO permit the dealers to waive the background check for "qualified RETIRED law enforcement officers".

You are correct, there is a retiree from my agency that works at the local gun store I frequent and he was telling me about that. I have that to look forward to but its going to be awhile.

It saddens me to read about the retirees who are having difficulty with their agencies supporting their right to carry under 218.

My former agency does it right; they provide EVERYTHING, including targets, ammunition, and instructors, all at no charge. And the Trooper's Association caters a very nice lunch.

Hell, I had to make a reservation this time... last year there were almost 200 people there, and the FTU staff was overwhelmed. Its coming up in two weeks.

These things are a mixed blessing. They are enjoyable, in that you see some old comrades; but you also see some sorry individuals you'd just as soon use as a target.

Such is life, eh?
