Single-stack 9mm conceal carry pistol

As I see it, when you opt for a single stack you are already reducing your capacity. If it were me, I'd forego the semi-auto and go with a 640 or 649, they are more "pocketable" than the 60. They all are good guns. Just remember, if you carry a little semi-automatic in your pocket a lot it's going to get full of lint and whatever. You have to clean it often and every time you clean it, you have to eject the round in the chamber. You can't keep rechambering the same round over and over as it will give you trouble eventually. The smallest I personally will go in a semi-automatic is the Glock 26/27, they are real guns and hold enough rounds to make a difference. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Generally, I am really annoyed when someone asks "should I buy A or B" and someone posts "Buy C instead".

In this case I have to agree with Badge 130. I was at the range Sunday practicing a CQB drill: draw, fire 6 rounds, reload and fire 6 more. With my Glock 26, I can consistently stay well under 8 seconds. This time, I used my CS9. The first 6 rounds were close to Glock speed but the single stack magazine requires a lot more concentration and time to line up. It took me twice as long to reload the CS as the Glock. That's time you are taking rounds instead of delivering them.

As much as I like my CS, the Glock 26 is a better combat weapon. I'll stick to double stack 9 mms.

AITG, I respectfully disagree. Any skill takes practice. I used my 3954 in CC League and with weekly practice, I am able to change out mags as quick as anyone, single or double stack.

And to Krehmkej, if you want a DAO single stack 9, I suggest you find a 3953 or a 3954 instead of hot-rodding a 3913 which will void the warranty.

This advice is worth exactly what you paid for it ...

I agree that any skill takes practice and I also agree that any mag change can be mastered. However, the design of most double stack mags - tapered at the top to feed the round directly into the chamber - gives you a funnel shape to start the mag into the well.

If I'm going to lose fine motor skills under stress, I'll take any advantage I can get.

YMMV.

Anyone have any suggestions for a nice subcompact 9mm that I may not otherwise have thought of?
...Money is a factor, but it will not be the deciding factor.

Others have already mentioned it, but especially in view of your note about money, I would say look at a Kahr CM9. It is the less expensive version of the PM9, which is a bit pricey, but a good gun.

I don't see 3913s/3914s as "subcompact" guns. Compact, yes, and if compact is a consideration, I think they are at the head of their class along with the SIGP6/225/239. BTW, none of these SIGs are "all steel". The ones I have seen all have aluminum-alloy frames.

The Kahr is pretty well established and seems to have a good track record. I don't shoot mine a lot, but when I do, I am always pleased. I wish my gun had a thumb safety, but the fact that I did not get one that did is not the gun's fault.

As a couple of others have already mentioned the P6 makes a nice carry piece. I saw on another board where someone now has a few more of them coming in and they are priced at $399 w/2 mags. Sorry can't remember who the vendor was. If you google P6 you may be able to find out who it is.

I'll just stick with my S&W 908...slim and flat. I've put Trijicon night sights on it since taking these pictures.

I now have this urge for another 3rd Generation S&W.... but for now my Kahr PM40 will get the daily call for CC

S&W will do the conversion and that keeps the warranty intact.
+1 on the 3953/54 (my personal carry choice).

I stopped looking when I got a Sig 239 9mm. The best and never jams in thousands of rounds fired. Perfection that works.

My brother occasionally drops his Polish P-64 in 9x18 Mak in his front pocket loaded with Hornady 95 grain XTP hollow points.

I carry a LC9 and it has been fantastic. I would wait and see what is released at the 2012 Shot Show as so many companies are entering the single stack market. I am excited to see the new offerings.

Good point. I have a little Sig P238 that is awesome. The new 9mm P938 is supposed to be available anytime and close enough to the P238 that it will fit the same holster. If you like 1911 style compacts, it might be worth a look. I'm gonna get one as soon as my dealer can get one for me. A little pricey -but Sig quality and reliability make it worth it. IMHO

I just read an article on the SIG 290. 6 rounds of 9mm in a very compact package. Much smaller than a 228/229, etc. but interesting nonetheless as far as a very concealable single stack. Personally, I prefer five rounds from a J-Frame vs. six from a 290, but I'm sure it will have its supporters.

Good suggestions. I did shoot a friend's Kahr the other day, and liked the feel of it. Only problem is that I'm a lefty, and the slide release and magazine release toggles were not very left-hand friendly. Otherwise, it was a nice pistol.

Anyone have any experience with Walthers or CZ?

No experience with Walthers but I do have a CZ 2073 Rami in 9 mm that I love. The factory trigger wasn't great but after a trigger job it it sweet. My other carry 9 is a HK P7 (mine is a PSP not a M8...both are great, but the PSP can be found for about $500 less.). The CZ RAMI has standard right hand controls so may not fit the lefty OP's needs, but the PSP squeeze cocker is completely ambidextrous. PSP is 8+1 single stack and the CZ is a 10+1 subcompact double stack.
