Wondering about the pen/marker used to touch up bare spots on blued finish on guns.
Does this"quick fix"work?
Looks like a sharpie marker.
Any experience with this product?

Temporary if shot & cleaned on a regular basis and on some guns the color match isn't great. I suppose it's easy enough to reapply when need be though and temporarily will make a scratched gun appear a bit nicer. If the scratch is more than just minuscule, I suppose it helps more than hurts.

The best "touch-up" cold blue I've use is the Birchwood-Casey Permablue and the Brownell's Oxpho paste. Again, these will wear off with regular use and cleaning, and YES, I've tried heating the metal with a hair dryer prior to applying it.

Yeah, I tried that pen marker on my Ruger Redhawk. It did cover minor scratches and I applied several 'coats'. It did wear off tho.

Semi-effective, but not permanent. Cost effective, however. Think of it as a "bluing band aid". I don't hesitate to use mine, but I know what I'm getting.
BTW, it doesn't work on aluminum parts of a Ruger Single Six. "Cause, you know
"...blueing.

As I have stated many times in other posts, I've NEVER experienced a totally permanent touch-uo bluing job with ANY cold bluing no matter how much I've prepped the metal with heat, alcohol, etc. Some do report better results than mine but I suspect that the firearm they are re-bluing does not get used all that much. I have tried too many times to believe cold bluing is permanent - no matter the brand. Again, best results are from Oxpho Paste and Perma-blue (B/C) in my experiences.
