I just purchased a nice S&W Model 422. The serial# is TBD55xx. Any idea of the approx mfg date? Also, I am new to this model S&W. Any facts or info from anyone who owns or owned one? Thanks.

The serial# tables in the SCS&W point to 1987, but only a historical letter will tell for sure.

Thanks, I do appreciate the help. Ball park works for me right now. If it's a keeper I may contact S&W.

I bought mine, TBB1971, in September, 1987. The introductory 422's came packaged with a 50 round box of ammo, a bottle of oil and a paper target.

It's been shot a lot since then and I do not recall ever having a stoppage. A big part of that is their magazine is based on S&W's precision, expensive Model 41 target pistol's magazine.

I do not know anybody who has had problems with their 422-622 series guns unless somebody dinked with them. They are great little field guns. I think they are a better pistol than what S&W replaced them with.

Better than the S&W 22-A?

Oh goodness yes, by far! I can't imagine anyone who has experience with both would say otherwise. My 2206 has been a fantastic pistol.

Larry,
The easiest way to find out the ship date is to call the S&W Customer Service desk. Provide them with the full serial number and they will be able to tell you in less than a couple minutes.

Thanks, John.
I thought it involved sending in a letter asking the same thing.
That sounds easy,

The phone call will only get you the ship date info. If you want anything more it you must request a letter.

I picked it up today and put 50 rounds thru it.
Very nice gun.
100% function and more accurate then I am.
I also field stripped it without a problem after watching a few youtube videos. Very, very nice gun for the money.

When they first came out, I just didn't care for the look of them and I opted for a 5.5" bull barrel Ruger Mark II in stainless. No regrets, not in the slightest.

In the mean time... the look of the 422/622/2206 has grown on me over the years. ;) I still believe they look a little wacky, the low-barrel design is anything but average, but the guns are awfully good and I have gotten phenomenal shooting from my 2206 over the almost two years that I have owned it.

Yours is very sharp -- that is a nice picture!
