The pistol was boxed up and prepared for shipment by S&W on June 6, 1989.
We know this because most of the time (but not all of the time...), the SPEC ORDER code gives us a 4-digit number to decode. This decoding does take a little bit of knowledge and finesse. The first digit is the tricky one, it corresponds with a year.
As your first digit is a 9, we know for certain that the year will be 1989, 1999 or 2009. We know it has to end with a "9" however we also know that this system of electronic and printed box label did not begin before the early 1980's, as early as 1982 or possibly 1983. We also know that at some point after the year 2009, S&W stopped using the SPEC ORDER and simply printed a 6-digit simple date, for example I have a box here that says 081815 and there is no header above it, and it means that it was boxed for shipment as simple as it appears, August 18, 2015.
So the knowledge base and finesse comes from knowing generally where the firearm came from, and as I am well versed in the 422/622/2206 series, I know these arrived in 1986 and were poof *gone* by like 1992, which is tragic because I believe this entire series was a fantastic run of pistols and furthermore, the 22-A series of guns that followed them were, in my opinion and experience, dogs all around.
