I know Model 29 is blued and Model 629 is stainless. Other than that, are they EXACTLY the same? So, same dash model years, same upgrades on the same dash models at the same time?

You have to be mindful of which engineering change you are dealing with, but other than the use of stainless steel, a Model 629 of a given engineering version is the same as a Model 29 made at the same time.

Good Question ...but they are Not exactly alike .
Different dash numbers ... thatindicate different upgrades .
Research the model 29 and 629 as different models ... don;t try to cross reference them .

Don't forget nickel plated. I have nickel plated 29. Purchased new in '79 or '80.

What prompted this question? I'm just curious.

I'm liking the 6" or 6.5" Model 29s whereas before I was more into the 4" 629s. So, theoretically, if I were to sell a couple of pistols (Glock and Ruger) and get a Model 29, I was curious which variant to get.

This may not be info you're looking for then, but had it typed so gonna post it. Even if it's wrong, as it's been too long, and memory isn't what it was.
But IIRC, 629-1 and 29-3 did away with pinned barrels and recessed cylinders. Then came 629-2/29-4. The 629-2 after receiving the Endurance features was for a short time designated the 629-2E. Later becoming the 629-3 and 29-5.

Current production 29s and 629s are largely the same. The 629's are all round butts and most of the 29's are square butt.
