Are you happy with your Shield???

very happy

Although not as concealable as my Ruger LCR, my wife likes it. The biggest issue with it is the extreme difficulty loading the magazines! Getting the 7th and 8th round in is tough without using an Uplula.

Love mine. One very worthy upgrade is an Apex Tactical Trigger kit. The factory trigger pull of 6.5 lbs (possibly more with some state specific versions) is, IMHO too much for a pistol of that size. The Apex kit reduces the pull down to 5-5.5 lbs and is worth every penny.

I've also added Hi-Viz sights (for my old man eyes) and Talon rubber grips.

I've put about 500 rounds through it with zero issues. As others have said, stiff slide, but will loosen up after a couple boxes.

It seems as though Poolie is looking in my windows. I opted for Williams Firesights, as I find them to be a bit brighter than any else. Talon grips, Apex and a bit of white Testor's paint for that "custom" look. And cleaned up/polished the feed ramp.
However, my 40 Shield is no longer my EDC. It's been relegated to a disassembled Fobus holster permanently mounted in my vehicles. I just found over 2 years that I just didn't like carrying IWB or OWB. I'm a BUFF (not to be confused with buff) and I'd rather carry in-pocket.
Yes, I know-can't draw from there in a vehicle-hence the Fobus mounts in all vehicles.
My EDC is a Sig P938/Ramora kit. Worth the $$$ and as accurate as a sub can be.

Back to topic: I still LOVE the Shield. Great shooter. Comfortable, safe and reliable (750+ rounds down-range). I cut my teeth on 1911's and always prefer carrying locked and cocked. I must have a safety for peace of mind.

Only your wife will know. She MUST find one she can borrow/rent and just try it out.

P.S. Don't let her get her hands on a P938. It WILL cost you. Beautiful pistol.

The M&P Shield is a great handgun!

When I first purchased my M&P Shield, I didn't like the gritty trigger pull, so I installed the APEX Trigger kit and voila'; the trigger is as smooth as butter now. This is (IMO) the best compact conceal carry handgun on the market. I have about 600 to 700 rounds through it, and it has eaten everything I've put through it. I am very impressed with how accurate this handgun has been. Especially since the barrel is only 3.1" long; amazing.

I would highly recommend this handgun to anyone that is looking for a comfortable, accurate and reliable conceal carry weapon.

Extremely Happy With Shield

I have had the .40 since they first came out. Loved it so much I just purchased another in 9mm. Haven't had a chance to get to the range with the 9mm yet but, I expect nothing but the same results as my .40, HIGHLY recommend the Shield!!

Both the kid and I carry one for CCW. No issues or failures; 100% dependable in over 1000 rounds each. Sights close to point of impact and nicely accurate to boot.

I've had shooters with rather small hands successfully try my Shield; it fits a range of hands well.

I'd suggest doing a rental to try one out for you just to be sure it fits.

Do I like the shield??

Absolutely! Can't say enough about it, my favorite gun by far for carry... It runs great, it's accurate, and I've had zero malfunctions through approx. 500rds. aside from my own goof-ups..lol. I wouldn't want anything else for the money.

I have one that is now running like a top. It was painful, with several trips to S&W to get it that way. Lots of folks have great results new out of the box, others not.

If you have patience and want that weapon to work, go for it. Hope it will click sooner than it did for me.

(Mine is also a 9mm)
What all did you send it back to Smith for? Mine is at Smith for the second time because the trigger pull is hard and inconsistent. It came back the first time somewhat better, but still really inconsistent. The inconsistency is what is bad. If it pulled hard everytime, I probabably get used to it.

I'm asking this because my wife wants a M&P Shield 9mm...

Thanks in advance...

As I said before, I do love my Shield, but your wife is the one who needs to make the decision. It is always better for her to decide for herself. My wife, after shooting my Shield and others, opted for the Glock 42. She loves it. She can shoot is all day and have no discomfort. It is an accurate and soft shooter. It is also lighter fully loaded than the Shield is unloaded.

I have owned the M&P Shield in 9mm for a couple of months now and put about 150 rounds through it. For some lucky people like me, the 18 degree grip of the M&P line makes for more natural off-hand shooting, desirable of course for a gun marketed for self-defense. While it's similar in overall dimensions to the Glock 42 (.380), it's weight no doubt makes recoil quite manageable.

I very much like this weapon, but there are some annoying properties with mine, and not everyone may experience this with theirs.

A full magazine requires a pretty brisk tap to seat properly. This seems less of a problem when the slide is in lock-back position.

The slide is a little hard to draw back, and does take a committed effort to get it into lock-back position.

The front sights on mine are not centered, and it appears to be impossible for the average gun-owner to adjust them. I tried both adjusting and removing (in the recommended direction) and bent a brass punch in the process. That sight isn't going anywhere without a drift tool or a visit to a gunsmith.

All that said, adjusting my aim provides fairly consistent 2 inch grouping at 25 feet. Still haven't decided if I want to send it off or just spend the money on a local smith to keep from being without it for two or three weeks.

I think if you get one with correctly centered sights, and your wife doesn't have complaints about the weight (19 oz unloaded) I think she would find it easy and comfortable to shoot, and it's good to have the best fire power that she can manage. She might also like having the Pearce grip extension, and the Pachmayr grip glove.

Good luck and always be safe.

Make sure she can operate it, the shield has the stiffest springs, both recoil and magazine, that I have seen. My wife cant operate mine, and when I got it the last bullet to go in mag was a pia. Other than that mine has run like a clock, no problems in any way, and it it is very accurate for what it is.

This for sure.Very tight when new. If you will leave the slide locked back for a week or so it will help break in the recoil spring.
Same thing with the magazines, keep them loaded and they will be much easier to load. When you lock the slide back for disassembly, rack it back smartly while pushing up on the slide lock lever. It will save the hide on your thumb.
Other than that it is an excellantlly designed and very reliable pistol and a breeze to carry in numerous different methods.

I bought my Shield about six months ago and it is now my favorite semiauto. It has given me zero issues through about 1000 rounds at ranges. As soon as I can afford it, I'll add a Crimson Trace greenie to it, fit it out for a Sneaky Pete and make it my primary CCW. My greatest fear is that as soon as the wife recovers from her most recent operation, she'll want to go to the range to try it out; I'm quite sure how that story will end...

Best CCW gun in my opinion

First the good news. My 9mm Shield has been 100% reliable. Very accurate. Easy to shoot. My wife loves it too. It hides much more easily than my Glock 19. I generally use an IWB holster, but it will fit in my front pocket with a Nemesis holster. Purse carry should be no problem.

Now the bad news. I had to buy an Uplula loader to load the mags. Very stiff mag springs at first. They are loosening up with use. Same with the mags for my M&P 40. Very stiff recoil spring. Hard, even for me, to retract the slide enough to set the slide lock. Also loosening up with use. It is difficult to load a fresh mag if the slide is in battery. You have to push the last little bit really hard, making tactical reloads somewhat difficult. No problem if the slide is locked back. Just make sure your wife can perform all of these functions, which take a bit of hand strength, and she will be very happy with this gun.

Great CCW. Added a set of tru-glo tfo's and an apex trigger kit. Pull is now a respectable 4.5# and the sights make it easier for fast target acquisition. The double safety is a plus for carrying in condition 1.

I bought my Shield when it first came out and have not regretted the decision. The only problem that I have with the pistol is not being able to lock the slide back during reassembly. I bought a "Handi Racker" to solve the problem.

I bought it for myself as the wife had a glock 19. she was having some limp wrist problems with the glock so I tried to get her to use the shield. After getting familiar with it the glock went in the safe to never see daylight again. the only issue we have had was the white dot on the front sight fell off I used fingernail polish and got her a veridian green laser. carries it on a custom holster I built for her and in her purse. she is a lefty and it functions without a hiccup over 2000 rounds down the pipe
