Too many people are "Disney-fied" and even though intellectually they say they know these are wild animals, as the old saying goes, 'familiarity breeds contempt' (or in this case a lack of respect).
Feeding these deer and the fact that the animals have grown accustomed to hanging out in close proximity to dwellings, people and domestic pets sets the stage for such. The deer reacted naturally to the dog charging him and when 'attacked' by the woman he did what these animals do - he instinctively defended himself. Better that deer develop a healthy aversion to getting close to occupied dwellings.
I personally agree going armed is always a good idea for those who can but she reacted foolishly in defense of her ankle biter, especially without a real weapon in her hands. Striking the deer in the face just lit the fuse. Likely accustomed to seeing the animals run off when humans get close she made a bad generalization and paid the price.
They say she is 'traumatized'. My own take is she got an education the hard way.
