I don't know if the big kitty is really mommy but it is female; as is the kitten.

The gene that make a calico colored cat (orange, black and white) is a sex linked gene. That coloring only occurs in females.

I'm sorry, I'm not a cat gene specialist;I just posted a pic I thought was cute. You can nitpick anything to death if you really want to...:D

I don't think anyone wants to nit-pick, just set the record straight! But you're right, we should not analyze a joke too much. And it was a good one too! :D

I guess those of us who own "Torties" ( or should I say "are owned by them" :D ) all know that they are always female. Can you spot LuLu (aka "Camo Cat") in the picture below?

Almost correct. There are a relative few male calicos, but that same sex-linked gene abnormality means those few are almost certainly sterile. ;)

Mostly, that's true. Mostly.

I know someone who has a MALE tortishell cat. Torti cats have the same sex liked gene that calico cats have, but it is expressed a bit differently, with no white, and generally just two colors.

Her cat has the rare XXY for sex chromosomes. I have read about it, but never ran into a first hand account.

The cat had male sex organs, bit 'his' testicles were undersized. This fits with what I've read that XXY cats are always sterile.

There are XXY cats that have the classical calico coat, too, but I have yet to get a first hand account of one. So far.
