At what distance is a threat no longer “a threat”?

If perp is facing you engaged with a firearm how could there be a set distance? By same token would be hard to justify shooting a perp in the back at any distance.
I think they should have a Federal law that a person engaged in committing a crime with a weapon can be shot under any circumstance. If a convicted felon or illegal alien it shouldn't even be submitted to the Prosecutor.
Cops that are involved in shootings involving convicted felons should get automatic protection from any charges or civil suits.

Since the Indiana mall shooting I now finish every session with 2 10 rd mags at 50 yds from my P365 on 12x24 silhouettes. I usually go 18 or 19 outta 20. At 50 yds he's a threat to someone if not me.

It's a disease associated with gun writing. The symptoms include tossing off ill-conceived, authoritative-sounding quips that usually don't amount to squat. In short, a compulsion to sound cool...

There is no "distance." It's the totality of circumstances that lead a reasonable person to believe they are threatened with deadly force that is aimed toward that person that counts.

Many places add another potential victim to the circumstances, as in protecting another person from deadly force.

That's a vague answer intentionally. Seriously, if anyone tells you anything more precise, they simply don't know what they are talking about. While you might prepare for "any" eventuality, there are far too many variables for a hard and fast rule with precise cutoff points between legal and not. The tiniest of details can change a legal shoot into an assault or worse.

There is a ton of case law that governs how DAs will decide who to charge and courts how to rule. I don't know it all. I just know it's out there, ready to bite you where you sit.

Bottom line is be very, very reluctant to pull a firearm and use it, be very careful what you say and who you say it to afterward, and expect to be second, third, fourth-guessed as well.

Funny, I went to the police academy, we qualified out to 50 yards. I went to FBI firearms instructor school, we qualified out to 50 yards. Now after 30 years of training, 7 yards is good enough? I don't think so.
..we also did 50 yards in the USMC
