Austin, TX area... educate me please ***UPDATE POST #44***

Foat Wurth ain't Foat Worth no more.

If you want to be close to Hood, Lampassas might be OK.

Black's BBQ Austin

Well, it's been awhile... we had several things to consider regarding moving away from Oklahoma. But now we are set on the greater Austin area in Texas.

I will only have a couple months left to work and my wife is almost out processed from the Army, just waiting on her retirement ceremony.

If you live in the greater Austin area please chime in... let us know what you think regarding places to live, -to go, -to stay away from, etc.

We are in communication with a realtor and we do want to live outside city limits, no restrictions. My wife will probably look at Ft. Hood for work but that's not written in stone.

We can't wait to move.... will be around May/June, when out kids are done with school here.

Appreciate any and all comments, we want to become Texans, yehaw :)

Black's BBQ in Austin is proof you do not have to die to get to heaven.

👍👍👍

"BTW, a gun store in San Antonio is one of the best places to buy Randall knives. Nagel's? Nagle's? Ask Spook 76. He shops there. See Post 14 in this thread."

It is Nagel's gun shop, and they do have a lot of knives, like a room full. Located on San Pedro Avenue inside Loop 410, on the north side.

Anywhere between Lampasas and Copperas Cove is decent if your wife will be working on Fort Hood. Kempner has some nice places.

I am just North of Copperas Cove.

There was some stabbings in Austin that hit close to home here in Florida.

My thoughts are with those victims and Family

We've got a secret down here in Mississippi. Maybe I better not talk about it, but: I'm located 20 miles south of Hattiesburg, 45 miles north of Gulfport. I've got 23 acres and a 2200 square foot home. Acreage is still available for less than $4,000.00 an acre. I just paid my property tax and it was under $500.00. I live 2 1/2 hours from Florida beaches, a little over an hour from New Orleans, less than an hour from Gulf Coat Casinos, and good restaurants everywhere. There's a PX for retired military at Camp Shelby less than five miles from my house and a larger one at Keesler AFB about 45 miles away plus a variety of veteran services. There's good hunting and fishing close by. I've got a freezer full of fish and five deer to munch on for the next few months. Good gun laws and I have a pistol range behind my house. I'm over 65 so I pay zero state income tax. We have major university sports teams that play a lot of SEC teams and The Superdome and the Saints are close enough to drive to and from a game and get back at a decent hour. I can do anything legal I want on my property without having to worry about a HOA. Winters are mild but summers are hot and humid. Crime stats aren't exactly perfect but with a little caution it's not a big problem.

You could look at Ding Dong in Bell County (get it?). It's a rural community just south of Killeen, so it's a not-too-bad commute to Fort Hood. There aren't a lot of stores and stuff in Ding Dong, but there is one notable attraction: the Mountain Creek gun range. It is veteran-operated, and while I haven't been there myself, it has many positive reviews on Google Maps. One thing's for certain, if you move there, no one will forget where you live!

I lived in New Braunfels for a few years, and I loved it. My recommendation is start looking north of I-35 directly between Austin and San Antonio, then move your search out from there. San Antonio actually has more stuff and is a better city than Austin in almost every way, but it is nice to be able to run up to Austin when you want.

BTW, when I live in New Braunfels they still pressed a German language edition of the local newspaper. There's a lot of German culture in the area.

Okay, so here's a little update. We just got approved for a home loan and talked to a realtor. My wife does everything through the VA and we have to use their resources. Okay.

So currently we are looking at Lampasas and Copperas Cove. Maybe south of Hood.

We'll see. We are excited....

Austin is not really Texas. Their motto is " keep Austin weird" and they really believe that! It should be more accurately referred to a "The Peoples Occupied city of Austin " and it is a beautiful city with wonderful museums and sights to see. Find a nice suburb or bedroom community to live in.

The Texas Hill Country, east of Austin was going to be the retirement area and even had 40 acres purchased. However, wife decided she like my (former) best friend better and the land had to be sold as part of the divorce settlement.

Ouch! It always hurts to lose a good friend.

That might be a way of becoming my best friend.

So, we officially put in an offer on a house and inspection should be done this week. If we get this house y'all better come for the house warming party, well, whoever is close to Ft. Hood :D

I think you'll enjoy most of it and find some of it annoying. I'm a pretty conservative guy that ended up in a liberal college town for 35 years. My world grew a bunch ;-)

How about Fredericksburg? Are Tx property taxes by county or municipality?

Both and then some. Where I live we get hit for county, city, hospital district, business development district, school district, and junior college property taxes. School district is by far the most expensive. Total winds up close to 1.5% of the home's appraised value annually. Could be less or maybe a bit more depending on where in Texas.

We have no state income tax, but we pay for it in terms of property taxes

Fredericksburg

Howdy,
We're in Gillespie County, Fredericksburg.
The "Jewel of Hill Country" nice high end Tourist town. Very German. Very well kept. 43 wineries in area. Hour plus from Austin and San Antonio. Very high taxes. We bought enough acreage to shoot on. Just outside city limits OK to shoot. Ten minutes from only Walmart and HEB supermarket and small hospital. Nice quiet small town.
Airport has lots or private aircraft traffic. Surprisingly a lot of them are high end jets like Gulfstream and the like.
Lots of really nice properties/ranches/estates for sale at not too bad prices.
For someone from Hawaii, the weather isn't that bad.
