Auto Start Stop

Kia has this system and I hate it. There was a recall on some KIA's because the system could catch fire. They told you to not park in a building in case it did catch fire. I read a study done on this saving gas. They concluded that to save gas you had to wait at each stop a least 3 minutes. That may apply to some peoples driving but not mine.

Recently bought a 24 Hyundai that has the idiot start/ stop function. Just turn it off when I get in. BTW it also has so many gadgets, quirks and unknown buttons I have to go back to dealer and get them to help me. Both manuals cover everything. Oh, I love the drivability and ride plus its as quiet as any high end car.

My '23 1500 Sierra is my second truck with the stop/start nonsense. It's pretty much burned into my muscle memory now to press the start button and then reach over to defeat the start/stop button. On the rare occasion that I forget, I get annoyed at the first light and then turn it off. My buddy claims there's a way to reverse the system so it is always off unless you engage the button, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

2022 RDX gets shut off when I start it without even thinking about the “feature”.

C8 goes to 4cyl at cruising speed with what seems like no loss of power  I guess that satisfies the global warming nanny staters.

I rented a new Mustang this spring that had it. Quickly found out how to shut it off and from that point on it was the first thing I did after I started the car. It also had a "feature" that would hold the brake on after you stopped until you stepped on the gas so you couldn't ease up on the brake and creep ahead. That was really annoying too.

I have a 24 GMC Terrain that has the Auto Start Stop feature. It has a small button on the dash that lights up when I start the engine. I just push the button to turn it off. Yes, I have to do it every time I manually stop and restart the engine. No big deal as I never intend to use the feature.

Luckily I don't have the feature on any vehicle. A good friend does and he hates it. His wife's car has it...and it has failed twice requiring tows to the dealer for repair. Tried to have it turned off permanently and the dealer won't do it.

My 15 was good that way also. My beef with my last Vettes was having the lights come on in the garage when car started and that also brought on the DRLs. I got it down to hit the start button and the headlight switch at the same time and voila no expensive headlights being worn out prematurely. When I want lights on I will do it not the car.

Do the same with my Jeep and wife's car hit the start button and knock out the start stop BS at the same time. Muscle memory at work, of course in a reasonable world you should not have to do stuff like this. Of course you got to do this each time you start vechicle!

If you don't need a pickup, consider an older model Lexus. I have a 2010 RX 450h hybrid SUV, bought new, with the auto-stop-start feature. It cannot be turned off. It has worked perfectly and seamlessly for the 14+ years I have owned it. I have kept my 450h for as long as I have because I like the design better than the current ugly-grille Lexus designs, and the fact I've had zero mechanical problems. I also like that it has a smooth V-6 engine rather than the rock-crusher turbo 4 that they have in the current model. The best part is acceleration. The electric hybrid motor has maximum torque at 1 rpm, so throttle response is instant and acceleration is actually fun. Fuel mileage is in the mid-twenties, which is not bad for a two-ton SUV. Finally, being an older model hybrid, it has a nickel metal hydride hybrid battery, rather than a lithium one.

If you absolutely hate auto-stop-start, I also have a more traditional truck-based SUV, a V-8 2016 Lexus GX 460, without it. It is smooth and powerful, but of course the fuel mileage is not-so-hot (mid-teens). It has also been problem free. I'm sold on Lexus quality. They simply don't break.

I watch YouTube, specifically Rick Conti’s ( many find him, Conti, annoying, I don’t disagree but his mechanic is top of the heap) factory trained mechanic. He’s great with all the tidbits and workarounds one won’t find in the manual. I have started a list of valuable shortcuts he reveals for all sorts of maintenance and programming issues.

It's true that there are aftermarket and bubba ways to shut of the A/S/S permanently, but as complex as new cars are, it's a gamble. You never know if something else won't work right, and the warranty will probably be kaput.

I just hate having to press more buttons than necessary to just drive.

Buddy tried to fit a cheap 'permanent off' A/S/S device to his wife's Audi. It caused all kinds of false alarm issues with the blindspot system.

My wife's SUV has the button you must press every time. My 2015 diesel 3-series has the button, but the system stays off even with restarts so long as you never engage the ECO mode. A/S/S on a diesel engine with a conventional starter just sends my mechanical sympathy chip into overdrive. Besides, how much fuel can you really save on a vehicle that does 45 mpg on any kind of run. My 2014 SUV does not have such a system at all.
