*%#@ Auto Start Stop

I don't understand all the grief about this. My 2016 Dodge Durango has it, and so does my 2022 Mini Cooper S. I hardly notice it except for the quiet when at a stoplight and the feature activates. Instantly when I lift my foot off of the brake and/or step on the accelerator the engine starts up seamlessly. The ONLY time I feel a need to press the button that disables this feature is if I am waiting to make a left turn and oncoming traffic is heavy and moving fast. That is the only time I do not want that fraction of a second delay in getting my vehicle moving. Otherwise its a nothing burger that I ignore.

I agree its NOT bothersome. You hardly feel it and the car runs fine.

When your starter dies a month past warranty, and you need a towtruck and have to pay the bill, then maybe you will understand that government nannies are not the right thing to have.

As far as the government is concerned, no expense should be spared to save a gallon of gasoline. If it ends up costing a consumer $500 in future repairs to save a gallon, that's okay, because it's good for the planet. Meanwhile, the elites that push this fly around the globe in their Gulfstream jets.

What happens is that the AS&S system detects if you have the A/C on and what the outside temperature is. What happens is that it either keeps the motor running, or only stops it briefly.

Thanks for answering my question, Steve. I doubt it will stop the motor much in the middle of the day around here then during summer. I usually keep the thermostat set at 65 and on recirc in my truck unless it's cloudy during the summer months just to stay ahead of the heat. Still it's yet another "feature" I personally have no use for. Just something else to break.

I know this much for a fact. If I didn't like auto stop start, I would not buy a vehicle with it

For the cost of a new car or truck you could buy a 20 year old one, have a completely rebuilt motor and transmission with warranty installed. New radiator, shocks, ball joints, U joints, new upholstery and a paint job. Or you could do like I did and buy 2 Nice luxury cars with around 100,000 miles on them and have enough left over to buy half a dozen more if one has a serious break down.

I guess the standing charges and costs must be a lot less than we suffer here in NV. Our insurance rates are steep in the Vegas area, and registration fees are based on the original MSRP of the vehicle and a depreciation formula. It's not hard to run up a registration bill of $1000 on a single vehicle here.

The system in the 2018 BMW X3 felt cumbersome. The car rattled on restart.
My 2018 Cadillac XT5 wa much smoother. The system on our new XT6 is smooth enough that it's not worth worrying about. I just ignore it.

My 2021 Chevy Traverse RS has it but does not have a button to disable. Bought a $10 doodad on Amazon that plugs inline with the hood switch. Works perfectly.

2023 has a switch next to the 4wd/awd/2wd switch next to the emergency brake.

Here if a vehicle is over 11 years old you can pay $87.50 and get forever plates that never need renewed. I haven't renewed plates for years. Because I don't have a bank loan and I can replace either of my Lincoln Town cars with another one from the early 2000s with around 100,000 miles for around $4-5000, I only carry liability insurance. The last one I bought I got for $2700 cash and all it needed was 1 window regulator ($50 and 1/2 a day) It had 110,000 miles on it and it came with a full sized spare plus 4 mounted snow tires. Couple moving to assisted living and bought it from their son. It is basically my spare car. My main one I got for 4K with 110,000 and it now has 160,000 and still runs excellent as the people who bought that type of car maintained them, and didn't abuse them. Heated leather seats, heated mirrors, multiple CD deck, +tape. all controls on steering wheel for stereo heat etc. Huge trunk and 23 mpg at 80mph in comfort. I have my eyes open for another.

"I got a question for you folks that have an auto start stop vehicle and driving in town in the summer. When your car comes to a stop like at a stop light and the engine shuts down, does it kill the air conditioning compressor?"

Like much of life, it's more complicated than you might think. This youtube clip by the Car Care Nut examines the subject; the part about air-conditioning is at about 12 and 1/2 minutes in if you want to skip ahead:

This guy has LOTS of excellent automotive videos on youtube. I always enjoy them and usually learn something new from them.

Glad you enjoyed it. He's sort of like the car guy equivalent of gunblue490's gun videos. Not a lot of loud, unnecessary music, and talks to you like an adult, not going for shock value or slamming things to show you how cool he is. Rare on youtube.

My 2024 Santa Fe has it and have had serious “ discussions” with service dept folks and they told me there are ways to disable it but will void warranty. So, with this “ decision” I’ll be back and tell them to disable it through the computer. Stupid thing almost causes wrecks as vehicle stumbles when trying to pull out into traffic. Good riddance is all I can say..

My F-150 has this little button on the dash that shuts it off. Unfortunately, you need to push it every time you start the vehicle.

I have discovered another work-around. If I apply just enough force on the brake pedal to keep the vehicle from moving, the stop/start function won't kick in. It will kick in if I apply more pressure. This comes in handy when I'm driving in heavy traffic or waiting to make a left turn.
My wife asked me why the car keeps reminding her to step harder on the brake, I find that irritating I just hit the switch the minute I start the car. Its enough of a problem that when I changed out the battery on my 2019 Highlander for the first time since new they asked me if the car had auto start/stop, it apparently is enough of an impact to require a higher amperage battery. I'm going to look into permanently shutting it off.
