I went back to work yesterday after being off for two weeks. I had some boring non-cancer prostrate stuff done. I've noticed a few differences in things that would probably get me banned from here if I went into too much detail so I won't go there. It seems that the older I get the more I have stuff replaced or repaired. I'm trying to get as much done as possible before I retire (maybe a year, maybe more more, don't know yet) so I won't have to spend a lot of my retirement in the doctor's office or the hospital.

I was actually glad to be back at work. I was getting bored hanging around the house and I'm wondering if it would be the same when I retire or will I feel like doing more stuff when I'm not recuperating from something. I'll figure it out when the time comes. I work with two ladies at the office. One loves me and the other has disliked me for almost 30 years. I do anything I can for the one that likes me and stay away from "The Beast From The Back" as much as possible. I attempt to be nice to her as much as possible but it doesn't do much good. She called me something years ago and my reply confirmed what she called me and it's kinda been downhill ever since.

Yesterday I was busy serving process. Today wasn't so bad so I got to poke around in some other stuff. A young lady came to the office and asked to see me. I've known her and her family for a long time. She's married to a *** who just got convicted in court for a burglary of some sort. The problem was not the conviction but it was the 12 year sentence he got for the burglary charge. He was offered a deal to serve a year and a half. His lawyer, who once did time himself, failed to mention the offer to him and insisted that the case should go to trial. Instead of the 1 1/2 he would have willingly pled to, he got 12 for getting convicted at a trial. That oughta give some of the lawyers here something to talk about.

We had an escape from a regional prison today. The description was a white male in green and white stripped pants and white T-shirt being driven away by a female in a small red Ford car. The escapee was from the Gulfport area. He was doing time for precursors and credit card fraud. We haven't found him yet and he's had enough time by now to be most anywhere. When dispatch gave the call out for some reason the song "I'll Be Home For Christmas" came to mind. Obviously the escapee had some help from the outside probably aided by a cell phone from the inside. The cell phone mostly comes from a crooked guard. I'm not there right now but I would bet a shakedown is going on.

We had another one wake up dead this morning. Apparent overdose on prescription meds. I don't know how it is in your hometown but we're getting about one a week around here. These folks get there stuff from two sources. They either get legal scripts from doctors or buy their stuff from folks that do. I hate to say this, but most of the folks that die this way ain't exactly pillars of the community. This is a huge problem nationwide that is not being addressed by anybody.

I had to take the back way home today. A tanker truck wrecked on the highway I usually go home on about noon today. It was a Mississippi Highway Patrol thing so I just went around it They were still cleaning the mess up when I got off.

Glad you are back at work. I hate it when I am off for health reasons.

Charlie I've been off for nearly two weeks and return to the office on Thursday. All my plans for the time off fell apart for one reason or another. So I spent most of the time around the house, running errands for the wife (who was working) or tinkering. Even though it wasn't the most productive use of time, I still like it better than the office. Can't wait until I am financially able to retire.

I've got two more weeks of vacation to use before the end of the year. Hopefully a couple of those days will be hunting days. Got to use the vacation days before the new year comes. Where I work they don't roll over.

Take care.

Glad to hear that you are back in the saddle.... well mostly... :)

In my little burb we have one pharmacy. It's been hit 3 times in the past two years and all three times the doers got a grocery bag full of oxy, vikes and dilaudid.

If it were me, I'd stake this place out 24/7 and it should be a goldmine for clearing outstanding warrants. The only good thing about it is that it seems to be displacing meth as the entertainment of choice among the trailer dwellers.

Speaking of waking up dead... A couple of years ago we had a rash of cooks move into rural farms in the area. Lotsa bad types around all of a sudden. Then there were was a shooting not far from me wherein the door was kicked in than five rounds of 00 fired from two shotguns. 4 KIA. All Badguys. No humans involved. Never was in the news, no charges filed. The row of motorcycles inside the barn went unclaimed and sold at auction not long ago. Damn fewer bad types around when I go out for coffee at night...

Glad you're back at 'em, Charlie.

You know, when we were having our annual Fall Festival and Chili Eating at my church a few weeks back, I just casually mentioned to someone at my table that the antibiotics I was taking for a staph infection were making me pee a funny orange color, you would have thought I had two heads the way a couple of people looked at me. I guess you're right, some things are better left unsaid.

Charlie, glad to hear you're back OTJ, and glad you're here...

Glad you're back. Don't worry about retirement, only thing bad is you can't call in sick. :D

Dopers are the scourge of our community. We are home to one of the largest methadone clinics in the USA and it's not by the interstate but about 5 miles out so we get these nodding off out of state drivers in their $500 whiskey lick cars showing up at dawn and a steady stream of junkies all day. Just substitute methadone for heroin, it's still an addiction and they still have to have their daily fix.

Ruined a nice rural area and there are serious accidents regularly. Indiana has lax laws and our local politicians can be bought cheap so this **** was rammed down our throat and it's turned out to be a heroin addict superstore right on Hwy 62 across from the old ammunition plant.

The older you get the more that they have figgered out what they can replace----it don't slow down after retirement---matter of fact it gets faster.
Good thing about it is that all those parts don't rot when they bury you so you have something lefy for the arciologist to study and wonder about.
Blessings

Welcome back to reality. The more I see of the world circling the drain, the more I want to sit on my dock and watch the sun go down.

Glad to have you back.
When you "retire" you could collect some of your posts and publish them as a collection. The world still appreciates good writing, and you do it very well.
As far as the Beast in the Back, remember that the best revenge is to live well.

I went back to work on Monday myself. I had a bunionectomy on the 21st. I had the "green light laser" prostate surgery a copule of years ago as well as cataract surgery. You are right it is good to get as much of this stuff done as early as possible. My father who is 89 recently had outpatient hernia surgery. There were complications and he had to go back to the hospital for a couple of days. Had he had it done 10-15 years ago when he was younger and it was smaller he would have likely avoided the complications. I am fortunate, at 60, to be in good health. These "repairs" have kept me busy for the past couple of years though. Getting old is not easy.

I seriously doubt her story. I don't know ANY lawyer that is stupid enough not to tell a client about year and a half plea just to waste time going to trial. I know for sure that I would rather earn my fee by negotiating a plea rather than waste two days in trial. What probably happened is that the lawyer tried to get the guy to take one and a half years, the client insisted on trial becuse he was innocent-he rolled the dice and lost. Now client tells the GF it was the lawyers fault-he's a taken that plea if it was told to him, and would be willing to take it now. Happens to me all the time. That's why Court transcripts and CYA letters are your best friend.
Without fail every time I have a trial, I stand the client up before a judge-outline the plea that is on the table and make the client state on the record that it was fully explained to him and that he rejected it and wants his trial. Most of the time client will say to the Judge something along the lines of "well, Now I understand it-I'll take the deal-this is the first time he ever explained it to me so I could understand, etc......" Used to make me mad, but it's all part of that face saving ballet that everyone has to play out.
That's why I go home and drink.
It's a whole different world out there.
Oh and ditto what Charlie says about the pills-down here they get them from the pill mills over in the "golden triangle" (Beaumont-Orange-Port Arthur for those of you unfamiliar with such things)

Glad to hear that you are back in the saddle. I have been homebound for 3 weeks now and confined to just one floor. Next week I am suppose to get a walking cast. After that I can get downstairs and do some reloading or something to pass time. I have been ordering dvd's and flashlights off ebay and Amazon.

Welcome back to work, Charlie. I like this thread.
I've been retired over twenty years and haven't caught up with the things to do yet.
Lessee, parts missing. Most of my hair, both cataracts, some teeth, gall bladder and the prostate. Next week or so I'll lose a shrinking heart valve. What's left? Umm, appendix and a kidney. That's all the expendable parts I have.

I'm still having fun out at the range.

You ought to come to Louisville Dec 10-11 for NGD. It's the worst show of the season with many out of town dealers skipping it. Be a chance to be a big fish in a little pond. Burg and Dickson are tight so Dick can get you all the badges you need. ;)

Charlie, welcome back to the thick of things. I'm glad the repairs seem to have helped. I'm 67 next time and mostly in pretty good shape considering the mileage. I'm doing what I can to stay in good health. I know life is a succession of hills and vales, and at some point we will all get to that last vale and know we will never make it up the other side. I'm trying to delay that as long as possible. I hope you and all my forum acquaintances here do the same.

And yes, keep the stories coming.

Right on about the 'scrip meds. Seems like half the people around me can talk only about their pain and what they do to manage it. One person I've known for decades recently had a joint replacement and is not tolerating the aftermath too well. Patches are being stacked and supplemental oral pain meds are being consumed on an ad hoc basis. I'm concerned.

Be glad you weren't eating asparagus at the same time.
