Ball and Caps?

Nice little rifle. Who made it? For a while that style was imported by Replica Arms of Marietta Ohio. It was a factory copy of a rifle built by Cecil Brooks.

It's an older Pedersoli Plainsman that I bought used a few years ago.

On the flip side, think of all the time you save not having to prep your fired brass (depriming, tumbling, inspecting, etc) before reloading!

PS: this is such a great thread, just gave it a 5 star rating.....
Great stuff from everyone.
Thanks especially to Kurusu, Andyd, and Muley Gil, P44

Jim,

remember when I wrote the price comparison in between Korth, Colt OMM and S&W K-22 in the other revolver thread? It was based on a 1969 Hebsacker flyer. The are having a cooperation with Uberti and Pedersoli for a very long time and that relationship should allow them also to request a certain quality.

The German S&W importers do the same, there are many S&W models sold in Germany, that we do not see here and many come with Nill grips to satisfy the needs of German competitors.

Sounds like a German version of Lew Horton! There was a recent article in DWJ in which they compared a new S&W 686 to one of the newest "dressed up" Korths. The S&W did very well for itself.
(They should run the test again after 25,000 rounds:D)

I noticed similar things in the UK, back when I used to read the old publication "Target Gun". In fact, that's where I first heard of things like the Hege Siber and LePage, both modern replica single shot percussion target pistols of very fine quality.

(Jay, the OP, I hope your thread has not gone too far astray for you! Thanks for getting it rolling!)

Jim

PS: I wonder if the ones that don't meet Hebsacker quality just get exported to the USA for sale in the "big box" and online discount gun stores?

Here are pictures of my .44 caliber Belgian-made Centaure Model 1860, and the holster I made for it.

This revolver was manufactured in the late 1960s.

Guys a lot of your might be scratching your heads and thinking "now how do you carry spare ammo in the field for my percussion revolver?". Well guys this is how I do it:

This is a USGI leather first aid pouch. It's the perfect size to hold a tin of Altoids (I prefer the cinnamon ones but as you see the mint one works too) which itself is the perfect size to hold six .44 caliber "Dixie tubes". A Dixie tube is just another term for a rubber pipe end cap. These are repurposed by Dixie Gun Works out of Union City, Tennessee and sold as a handy way to carry spare ammo in the field. You pour in a measure of gunpowder, stuff a ball in there, and a lubed felt wad can be stuffed right above the lead ball.

Guys what this gives you is a self contained, water resistant single round of ammunition that makes for a handy reload in the field. Nicer than lugging around a powder flask, ball bag, wads, etc. Also in the tin is a nipple's prick for ensuring a clean fire channel, a small rag, and some percussion caps. This is a handy setup, especially for hunting and camping purposes. You can top off as you go so you'll always have a full cylinder after popping bunny or squirrels.

Guys here is a great YouTube playlist from master woodsman Blackie Thomas. He uses cap and ball revolvers often and these videos will show you these aren't just a novelty. They can be a practical and useful field revolver:

OK, this one is not a cap and ball revolver, but a flintlock muzzle-loading pistol. Japanese reproduction of an English Tower pistol, or so I am told. Caliber is .62 (IIRC).

Edit to add: Yeah, it works! :-)

After burning up some Swiss No. 2 (I like hot water+soap and BALLISTOL
for cleaning bp-guns):
Dirty HEGE Remington ARMY MATCH and Pedersoli Le Page

Looking at the Le Page, somehow this old german (...hat der Blinde schon geschossen ?)
bp-shooter joke comes to mind.... I try a translation:

The Duel

There once were two men  -a blind and a deaf-  who got into an argument with each other. After

all was over, nobody knew exactly why or how it started (women, horses...whatever).

But they got so in rage, there was only one way to clear it. Exactly: A Duel...

So a few days later in the morning dawn they met with their seconds at the choosen place. The

seconds opened one of this beautiful pistol-cases*, examinated the pistols, wiped down the barrel

to remove all oil, perhaps even shot a few caps to clear the nipples and started loading:

Putting in the carefully measured blackpowder, centering a patch exactly over the muzzle, laying on

the .44 round ball...When THE BLIND  -who  barely could differ between day and night-  a bit nervous

asked his second:

"Is The DEAF already here ?"

And a few seconds later, the seconds just shoving the patched roundballs down the barrels onto

the bp-loads, THE DEAF  -who couldn't hear anything-  a bit anxious to his second:

"Has THE BLIND already shot ??"
