I have set it as my goal to solve my lack of skill to shoot with Service Grips in 2009 along with moving back from the 15 yrd line to the 25 yrd line. 15 is finally getting too easy so to speak so now is time to move back.

Some will recognize these 38/44's as they came from the forum and to those who sold them to me I can only say Thank you! I know you will recognize them but I figured you may or may not want it known.

So this one is a low serial number 38/44 HD that was shipped in early April 1930. It is one of my shooter service grip HD's. Very tight lock up and easy to aim but the grips flop in my hands. As per my usual, 50 shots, 15 yrds offhand.

I was piddleing with my sight picture and with hot loads of Unique (nearly 38/44 levels, but just below at +P+ 38 special levels) I was getting a decent group. I then switched my grip to try and bring the group down to the center and I found that I was scattering more.

After about 350 rnds out of the 5" I switched to the 6.5" shooter HD I use. This one is from the mid-30's (I have it lettered but did not look it up) and has a very tight cylinder. The reamer must have been worn because every round that would just drop into the 5" was tight in the 6.5". The trigger has a very slight take up and then breaks cleanly. It is much easier to shoot this one double action then the other.

I have a bit more of the gun swimming in my grip so that will be the goal in 2009 to sort that out. I shot about 400 rnds of hot unique loads and then I was starting to get bored so I just plinked on the berm at 75 yrds. Once you figure the trajectory it is fairly easy to blast away on rocks and dirt clods.

Again, let me say thanks to those of you that have contributed to my 38/44 collection and yes I am using the shooter guns as they were planned for. I did also shoot my pre-war shooter OD but for some reason I did not put pictures up on the ftp site so sorry about that. I did much better as I have magna's on that gun.

Please remedy this omission !

Very nice shooting with hot loads & service grips !

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that has issues with the original stocks.
This old 1917 really is difficult for me to group well,
I would really like to shoot it well, but with
short, fat fingers and the original stocks
the .45 is hard to hold onto, I do like your new years resolution! Happy 2009, Mark

I too find the original service grips, as well as Magnas, a little hard to hold on to. They don't have enough meat for a good purchase. I;ve found it to be about the same between N and K frame grips.

I suspect those small grips coupled with larger handed shooters gave rise to the grip adapters. Increased surface area giving a better purchase.

I also find the standard service grips on pre-war HDs challenging for accurate target work. I shoot my post-war HD much better because it wears magnas.

The HD you see below also hails from April of 1930.

Nice shooting, Peter!

Regards,

Jerry

Pete,
Looks like one big hole to me! I agree that the service grips are more difficult to shoot with and is probably why they went to the Magnas. I've never used a Tyler TGrip, so I don't know if that will help your hold.
Glad you are out banging those targets!
Bill

I agree that magna's are a lot easier to shoot with.

Of course 50 shots at 15 yrds offhand.

These are how I can do with magnas, but they are older targets. I am trying to shoot all new pictures.

Very Nice !

Too bad we could never get the Starline 38/44 brass order pushed through !

Yeah I do feel bad about that. Interesting how folks seem to commit then back out as the realities come forth.

In retrospect I should have committed to more like 10,000 pieces instead of 5,000.

Well, none other than Elmer Keith didn't like service grips and much preferred Magnas. He even claims a bit of credit for the idea of Magnas in SIXGUNS. So, gents, we are in good company.

I have a Pre-War HD that was factory refinished in '81 and had period Magnas installed then. I shoot so much better with them on the gun than with a pair of silver-medallioned service grips I found at a gun show.

I'm happy to see others out there shooting their HDs and other vintage Smiths.

In my most recent range session, I took my transition-era HD, 5-inch barrel (I think that is the perfect N-fram bbl length) and had about as much fun as you can have without laying down.
