Barney Fife's Gun???

He also carried an M&P. I guess the prop dept just gave him whatever was available on a given day.

Somewhat drifty:
For all the holster time it saw, doesn't it seem like Barney's revolver was always in pristine conditon?

As a matter of fact, can anyone recall a tv detective, policeman, oh heck, even a bank robber / bad guy of any type, who had a worn looking gun? (We'll leave out Jed Clampett's flintlock rifle.) :D

Worn gun

In L.A. Confidential the movie. Russell Crowes character Bud White his gun a "snubby" had worn grips. There is a scene were the Captain is giving back his badge and gun and reinstating him and the guns grips were all banged up. I thought that was done deliberately in the movie to show Bud White as a detective was a rough enforcer.

Mine too! I often think that I was born during the wrong era. I would have loved to have been a cop back in the 50s & 60s. The props and costumes used in LA Confidential are spectacular! The suits the guys wore, complete with hats and suspenders. The Colt Detective Specials carried by Officer Wendell "Bud" White (Russell Crowe) and Lt. Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce), the Colt 1911 carried by Sergeant Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) and especially the scene where Catain Dudley Smith (James Cromwell) has Bud White in his office and he is telling him how disappointed he has been with his performance lately, all the while holding his sap on it's end, vertically on the desk, kinda like in the back of his mind he wants to reach out and smack Bud with it and it's taking every ounce of restraint not to.

Here's the clip YouTube - L.A. Confidential part 11 you'll need to fast forward to 2:12 for the particular scene. :)

Didya notice the tan leather .38 Special cartridge pouch on Dudley's belt? ;)

Just an awesome movie!

If I remember right about 5-6 years ago on ebay someone was selling Barney gun and it was a colt. If I remember right it was at about 3000. I wished I could have bid on it!

Naw, it was definately a K-Frame (Or the Colt equivalent). IIRC, Barney's had a 5 inch barrel. No doubt to squeeze a little extra preformance (and accuracy) from the .38 Special. Such were the gun-saavy policemen of Mayberry!

Isn't Andy Griffith a member of this board? Maybe you should ask him, after all he took Barney's gun away a bunch of times.

I don't remember where I came across this. No doubt Andy had it "rendered non-firing."

No, ebay originally allowed firearms sales. I think they changed their policy about 9 years ago.

I'm an expert here. There were 249 episodes of The Andy Griffith show, and I have them all on tape. It's my favorite show.
Now, as to the original question (from 2009), it was a Colt. Don't know which one but no doubt about it. In the episode where he has to qualify, after throwing a way a chain letter, which makes him nervous, they show a real good shot of him shooting. It was single action shooting if I remember correctly. The cylinder clearly turns clockwise. That ain't no M&P for sure.
Now, NIP IT IN THE BUD!!!

Don't know what Barneys pistol was, it shook too much. But I remember a S&W M&P for sale from "Hill Street Blues". In really rough shape from being fired with blanks & never cleaned. Don't know what it brought. Might ask Sip.
