I have a a section of bull barrel that I want to fit to an old model 10. I have read that the threads are .540-36. My son is a machinist and can cut the threads. I think I will have to have the barrel turned or milled to clear the ejector rod. Is there anything else I should be aware of when pursuing this. I got this as an ultra snubnose (no barrel) and just want to make a range toy.

The normal diameter for making a PPC gun with a sight rib is 1-1/16, or 1.062. If not mounting a rib, you will need it smaller to put on a front sight. How much smaller depends on the sight you use. You may want to make it slab sided to cut down on weight. The normal heavy barrel is around .800 diam.

A M10 frame is about .825 wide. They vary some due to hand finishing processes. An .850 wide slab would look nice if the barrel isn't already that diameter. You want about .015 to .020 clearance above the ejector rod. That leaves a bit of the barrel for the crane to butt up against to support it during recoil. Do not turn the barrel in or out with the crane in the frame. That will cause damage to both.

You will need to turn the threads off of the barrel extension (between frame and cylinder) to about .494 diam. and make a small flat on the barrel extension at the bottom for crane clearance. You want the clearance cut as minimal as possible, around .480 measured from flat to round.

When cutting the threads, use the frame for a thread gage and make a close fit to the frame threads.
