Baseball

I enjoyed MLB until the players started acting like spoiled brats, but even then, I still liked to watch the Orioles play now and then because of my past long association with them. When I was at kid in the 50's and 60's in Baltimore, a number of the players lived around us, and we'd wish them well as they left their rowhouses headed for Memorial Stadium or the airport. I was even at the welcome parade when the former St. Louis Browns arrived and rode through downtown as the Orioles for the first time in 1953.

MLB finally left me altogether when they committed a mortal sin and tore down Yankee Stadium, the very womb from which sprung Murderers Row and a couple of generations of baseball greats and the subsequent exploding popularity of MLB. That was the final blow. It was glaringly obvious that it had become a "game" about the money, of the money, for the money, for the TV ads. Haven't watched a game since.

I was a big baseball fan for decades. Then the players all became a bunch of mercenaries and the Astros moved to American League (that's not really baseball) and that was the end of that.

I agree that the DH is a cheat. I understand that the National League will be going that route as early as next season. That sucks IMHO. I always thought that the NL was better baseball since all players went to bat.

And yes, tearing down the original Yankee Stadium was an act of unbridled greed. Not a Yankees fan but I can see why ameridaddy would take offense.

ASTROS???!!!

I'll hold my tongue. I don't need anymore dings.

Way back yonder I played B and then A class minor leagues...until I just realized it was not a good way to make a living. Buses all the time cheap motels fast food(it was fast food back then). Heck I made more money running a pool room. Even in the Bigs the average player made 20 grand. Heck Mantle made what?...125 grand for a few years...and I surely wasn't a Mantle...but I was a much better hitter than Willie Miranda. LOL Remember him ameridaddy?? And yeah...even the big names didn't charge kids for an autograph... I still have a baseball Mantle signed for me at the old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. He was warming up before the game. Little leaguers out in the bleachers. It was one of those odd days..The Orioles happened to win...a rare thing in those days especially against the Yanks

I hae been a fan of the game since the early 60's. In my early married life I played 3 nights a week and managed a youth church team one other night.
I swore I would give it up when Manfred pulled the low A leagues out of Montana but still check box scores for my favorite team and it's affiliates.
Like Skeet said, tough way to make an easy living. Everyone playing today should thank Curt Flood daily.

I love the sport of baseball. Also like the OP I always watch the LL World Series. Played little league and Babe Ruth league also coached in LL for eighth years . My team is the Yankees since 1959 , Maris , Mantle etc . On the current edition of the team I much admire Brett Gardner , he plays hard all the time and is a great defensive outfielder.

I'm a sports fan in general, although football and basketball have turned me off in the last couple of years. Right now I'm watching Red Sox/Yankees and rootin for the Red Sox!!!

I remember the name and I'd recall some more if I saw the name in print. I guess after the Browns/Orioles conversion parade, my most memorable Oriole moment at Memorial Stadium was in a game where Dad and I were in the bleachers behind home plate, and Dad said "Watch this guy, you'll never see his like again." So I watched as number 9 got up from his one knee position in the on deck circle and went to the plate and dug in, and as I watched, Ted Williams hit a double.
Dad was right. He retired that year, and from everything I've read, he was the greatest all around hitter ever. So I'm glad my Dad cued me in to pay special attention to that moment.

Astros have the best record in the league today. They have something to prove and I hope they can.

I love baseball. Played thru Pony league, then started in the machine shop. Played softball from 19 thru 36 yeats old, and umpired up to high school aged kids for 13 years after i quit playing.. i still like watching, but Mrs hates baseball, so it isnt on our tv very often.

Pirates fan for life ...even though I dont follow much anymore.

Knotted up going into the 8th. A true cliff hanger.

And my Bulldogs walk it off to advance to the CWS finals against Vandy - who took two out of three from us in Nashville, back earlier in the season. In 2018 and 2019 we had good threads following the entire NCAA baseball tournament, in which Rusty was a great contributor. My Bulldogs played some exciting baseball, but could not make it to the finals. I thought about trying to start another thread this year, but had some other things going on, and thought I would just wait and see what happens. Now my Bulldogs will be playing for the National Championship. I really became a baseball fan when a freshman at Mississippi State back in 1970, and enjoy the college version.

Tough for Arkansas, who was ranked (and seeded) No. 1, much of the year (and swept my Bulldogs at the Dude), only to lose their Super Regional to NC State (similar to Mississippi State in 1989 - No. 1 or 2 most the year only to lose out in our Starkville Regional). Also tough for NC State, who could not play the elimination game with Vandy due to COVID testing issues. IMHO, they should have been allowed to play the game.

We have the Alaska Goldpanners college age players. Tom Seaver Jason Giambi Dave Winfield Randy Johnson and many others have played on Alaska League teams. Also reserved box seats on the third base line 37 games for $125.00 is the Best Buy in town.

We had a good day at the ballpark today. My pitcher went three innings with 4 strikeouts in a first appearance with a new team. Not bad, could have been a bit better-was a good-hitting ball team.

My power hitter went 4 for 6 today with three doubles and a single. He's livin right!

I count myself as a baseball nut & am lucky that my wife enjoys the game too. My childhood dream was to play first base for the Washington Senators but my skill level relegated me to neighborhood pick up games.

Played till I turned 40, still love the game and my Tigers. That said, haven't watched a pitch since MLB decided to go down the "Woke" path.

I used to play it and love watching it. It was the iconic American sport in my mind. The players were actual hometown heroes and were pretty much regular people off the field when I was growing up.
I got to work the Tiger games as a police officer in the 1970's and really enjoyed it.
Then it just got to big because of greed for money like everything else. Now the idiots had to get into politics, and when they moved the MLB out of Georgia to make a political statement, that was it for me.
I understand that most Americans really don't stand behind their beliefs and need to be entertained like children. That's why we as a nation continue to get weaker.

You would have been starting material for the Senators.

Buckwheat had the Senators pegged when Mrs. Crabtree asked him about Washington.

Washington was first in war, first in peace and last in the American League.
