Basic Survival Skills Lacking For Young Millenials

Wonder if they could change out a tire, replace a radiator, replace an alternator, cook something that resembles decent food. Or till the ground, fertilize the ground and start growing their oun food. Then install stakes for the pepper and eggplants. How to take down a tree little simple things we do almost every day. To me they are becoming a lost generation. My wife told me that one of my sons in law would cut the grass if I let him use the kubota. yeah right I'm gonna hand over the keys to a 30K tractor to someone who's never done anything like that. Dealer who I bought my kubota from told me two new kubota owners somehow managed to drive their machines into the bayou. bet they had fun trying to explain that one. Frank

these kids can do things with electronics that i can't do. looks like they are fine as long as the infrastructure works.
they believe it will always be here.

in the back of my mind , i expect it to fail someday, because it gets increasingly complex.
this would cause a die off.

if their confidence is warranted, all will be well.

perhaps they are right?
there have been no long term failures in my lifetime, so perhaps my fears are groundless.

As the world changes around us survival skills change with it. My neighbor who is 88 doesn't have any computer skills. He still pays his bills when they come in the mail. Sometimes he forgets and they send him a notice. He gets it in the mail and it takes him a good long while to figure out if he actually paid it. I would say computer skills are now survival skills but some would disagree. This old guy can butcher a deer and he had a garden up until a few years ago. He also does his own cooking and does a pretty fair job with it. He would rather build something than buy it. He has a shop and used to build furniture.

The problem is the younger generations don't want to work with their hands. They've been led to believe that isn't a good way to make a living. The reality is pretty soon those skills will be in such high demand most millennials won't be able to afford to hire someone to do it for them. In that respect it will become a survival skill. Most of them don't even own the basic tools anymore because they have no idea how to use them.

I wonder how many know how to break a window per the Fenestration council safety glass. Due to structure standards many windows have a small x on the glass near a corner that is the only place it will break if hit.

Nah..You just had to learn how a fireboy does it!! I had a couple of truckies on my shift.. All I had to say was sick'em and those windows were gone. They loved their job..They could destroy a tank!! LOL!

This "study" was done in the UK? It is no wonder then. I grew up with camping as a regular way to spend a long weekend or vacation. Places we liked to camp were usually near a lake, river, or pacific ocean and swimming would be part of the fun. When we moved to England we didn't go camping once. Many of the campgrounds there look like oversized parking lots. At that time they were often full of "travelers" (aka gypsies) too. I never swam in a river or lake there either. Who wants to swim when the water temperature is 42 degrees and the summer outside temperature is 62? Not me!

In Germany campouts away from parents are part of their curriculum in schools beginning in kindergarten. Even 4 year olds are given knives to whittle sticks. This was an interesting article about that: German Kindergarten Campouts Test Helicopter Parents - WSJ

Last fall I was down at my beach cabin and decided
to do some fishing...fall flounder run.
Young 25year old or so couple were close by while
I set up.
I lit up my Coleman Lantern(fuel type)...
they were dumbfounded.

When I caught a fish you would have thought I laid a cobra
at their feet.

Floundering while wading with lantern and spear?
Stingray can be exciting if someone isn't familiar either on a spear or rod and reel !

It was firemen that taught me about it.

These "basic skills" are great but in reality won't earn you dime in the modern world, no offense, just the truth. The modern survival skills are all technical and electronics oriented. And as those of us who grew up depending on the skills mentioned in the the original post believe/fear will eventually be needed to survive at sometime, the current and next generation would just as well choose not to survive in such a primitive world. Not unlike those of my generation who, if a nuclear war had broken out during the Cold War, hoped the first bomb fell on their house so they wouldn't need to live in the post nuclear war world. Just my thoughts.....

there were those of us, as children, who hoped for an atomic war to thin the herd.
i appreciate electricity n indoor plumbing more now than then.

civilizations rise.
civilizations fall.
someday our skills will be needed, but not in our lifetime.

With all due respect but a nuclear war doesn't thin the herd but ends the species. Either through direct destruction or by destruction of the environment.

All skills are valuable, but all things are relative.

My question is: Based on how dependent we are upon technology and modern conveniences, do we not have a vested interest in ensuring that society never collapses in the first place?

Are these the same people who are so concerned about the environment, but have no understanding of it? That's because they have been trained to parrot "concerns" about things for which they have no knowledge. Those, I cannot take seriously.

They better hope things don't get primitive, cause those urban predators and the kids from south of the border will be eating them for lunch.

However, as has been noted, there are some who aren't sheep, that have the ability to think and take action. I suppose most of the passengers on the Titanic couldn't swim, either.

Agreed that they can use electronics better than me. However during a hurricane my SIL's brother was at the house and when the lights went out thought he was going to freak out. Then again after it was all over, one of my wifes friends had asked when the air conditioning was going to be turned back on after I humped the generator on the patio. Had to explain that 6500 watts wouldn't power up the whole house although I did have a 3' diameter fan running full tilt. At which point she and her husband promptly left. After bumming a big bag of charcoal. Frank

If were talking a post apocalyptic situation then most would not survive. Sure the ones that were in the Military would most likely do fine but the regular Millennial cant blow their nose without help. They would quickly be dominated by Those that know how to do things and have to work for Them for food and water.

The survival skills I see lacking in many millenials are the ability to communicate face to face, use manners and show respect. The urban jungle is where they need to be able to survive.

^^^^^^^^^^Quadruple dittos. One of the main things is the "me first" mentality. Most ignore light criticism, others get embarassed by it and actually acknowledge their "my bad" behavior. There is still hope for some of them.
