Beer

Ooooooo now were talkin'

I love my Oregon Pinots, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape....

I love my once a week sip of The Macallan....

BUT I sure loves me my beer!

A small brewery in Ft. Bragg, CA (North Coasts Brewing Co) that makes some simply amazing beers, but two stand out:

Brother Thelonious (Belgian Trappist style ale best in a chilled snifter glass)

and

Scrimshaw, a true Pilsner that is the best American made pilsner I've had.

Be careful with the Thelonious, it will knock your socks off, it's a sipping beer, not a drinking beer. It really is outstanding.

Summit Brewing Co. in Saint Paul is a smallish (but not tiny), newish (26 or 27 years) brewery that makes some really good beers. My favorite is their original, Summit Extra Pale Ale. It is not a microbrew, but holds up against small-batch beers from all over, including some of the favorites of the Colorado microbrew snobs. It goes without saying that it blows stuff like Sam Adams and Fat Tire out of the water.

There is a little bit of local chauvinism in my choice, (and for a while I was kind of hot for the ex-wife of the founder, who was way out of my league, but that's a story for another day) but as I suggested above, I have taken it on the road and found a good reception.

For a change of pace I like Bell's Two Hearted Ale, from Michigan. It is crisp and hoppy (but not too), kind of like Summit, yet distinctively different.

Over the holidays in Chicago we hit a local store and came back with a selection of brews, and a few of those with the best names were deemed worthy of a photo. Some were pretty good, some were not worthy of discussion and some were downright hideous. Unfortunately, I can't recall which were which!

Cascade is, by far, the best I have ever had. A 'beautiful beer' as my friend in Fremantle always said. Unfortunately, the good folks in Hobart are very territorial and keep it all for the residents of Tasmania. That was the case in 1991, though it may have changed since then. Tiger beer in Singapore is another favorite. Pacifico is locally made in Mazatlan, but like most imports, doesn't taste quite right by the time it gets to Minnesota. In Canada, Moosehead is the way to go. I live 100 miles from the border and can truly attest to the fact that imported Moosehead is NOT the same as what you find in Canada. For local beers, I prefer August Schell's Original and Grain Belt Premium.

Okay, so there have been all kinds of threads about everyone's favorite spirits and wines, but not one about beer.
So, what's your favorite beer?

I'll stick to the ones that are free, thank you :D

If not, i'll take a Chimay please.

I really like a variety of beers and ales. Dogfish Head 90 Minute Indian Pale Ale, Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Yeungling Black & Tan, Negra Modelo, Sierra Nevada Ale, Guinness Stout, Harp Lager and for a good, flavorful cheap import- Tecate!

I spent most of a weekend in the Hofbrauhaus in Munich during Oktoberfest(1971). I barely remember as I'm only going by what I told.

I was stationed at Rhein Mein AB for 3 years (1970 to 1973) so I got to go to Oktoberfest 4 times. I think most of the time spent in Munich was by going by what I was told. the beer had a way of doing that

I used to try them all. Some I really liked, but consistent quality, freshness is a problem with less common names. "Skunk Beer" is still too common out in the sticks of Ga.

Like many here have stated, my beer consumption has waned from what it was in the days of my youth.

Truth be told, other than some radically flavored stuff, I've liked most that I've tried.

There are sooo many good beers out there. A proper pint of Guiness is great; Smithwicks, Newky' Brown, Tecate, Pacifico, Carib, Hiroon, Banks, Baltika, Tsing Tao, Kirin, Moose Drool, Fat Tire, are just a few commercial ones that come to mind. I love microbreweries and always enjoy sampling their wares too.

Belgian or Belgian style ales are my fav! Saessons, Triples, Quads.

-Delirium
-Omagang 3 philosophers triple & quad

I gave up on beer awhile back when I realized that I was working too hard for so little in taste, satisfaction and empty calories. Life is too short to drink bad beer. I now drink beer infrequently but when I do I like Stone Ruination IPA,Big,bold and not too subtle and great with spicy foods which I love so dearly. and on the road a well pulled pint of Guinness and some Woodpecker hard cider.

Well , if we walked into the bar with the largest selection of beers in the world and you said you were buying , order any beer no matter the price , I'd still order a Rolling Rock!

I'll leave the fruit & nut beers for the fruits and nuts!

I have never "liked" as many posts in a thread as this one!

YUM YUM YUM! I am a beer head big time. I am not very astute on every oddball import and micro made, nor am i bound to one paticular brand. I have found that i have to prioritize my beer choice according to 3 categories...

1. "hydration beers". This class of beers include all easily accessible beers, bud, bud light, MGD, yeungling, michelob, busch, etc. These beers are not overly strong so naturally lend themselves well too all day enjoyment, or as some would call it...."power drinking". If i am feeling like an all dayer comin on, these are what i choose. Bud and bud light are my top two choices. Not a big Miller fan at all.

2. "Tasty beers". These for me include just about any IPA, as i am a hopper big time. Some of my favorites include Commodore perry from Great lakes brewery, but really anything from these guys is top shelf stuff, very consistent. They always have a seasonal beer too. Christmas ale, Octoberfest, and my all time favorite is their Nasferatu imperial red ale. Newcaslte is quite nice as well, plus many others mentioned above. Tasty beers for me must be moderated and not started too early in the day and REALLY limit my level of involvement in anything real technical. Another go to tasty for me is Stone Brewery's sublime self rightious.....oh my, heaven in a bottle.

3. "puke beers". Any beer with friggin fruit in it......I was on a kick once where i drank bud light lime for awhile, GREAT in the summer cuz you can really crush these things without gettin too gooned up. But just about any other fruity beer i have tried is a puke beer too me.

If you are buying, I'm not fussy. If I'm buying it's Straub if available. It's what I buy for home. I do drink some Bud as thats what the neighbor gives me for plowing his driveway. And there is usually some Corona in the beer fridge as my wife likes one once in a while.
