Best birthday gift I've ever given myself....

Great great job! It takes a lot of determination and dedication every day.

You may want to incorporate the stair climber into your workout. It's gentle on the knees and good cardio workout.

Congratulations! Attitude is one of the main factors when trying to lose weight You have it right. Hang in there.

You are so very, very right. Attitude is what allows you to dig in and stay the course. Sure there are small setbacks along the way....but the right attitude keeps you driving towards your goal.

Yup. I gave this a try. The one I used aggravated my knee a bit. I really am liking the elliptical. It's working well for me.

Thanks again, folks. Haven't been on here much lately...been busy with my job and working on other things. Progress is steady.

I'm hoping to get some time in the deer woods soon....very soon.

I'm just beginning..

And it took knee replacement surgery on 11 Aug to get me started. I've dropped 20 pound now, from 6'1", 250 to 230. Cut way back on the daily drinking and watching my food intake so far and plan to start in the gym when cleared by physical therapy. I'd like to see below 200 again before then end of the year. I'm 69 this month and will have the gym time as I'm applied from retirement from civil service!

I'll read your thread again if I get discouraged!

6pack, Damn man, that's downright awesome! You certainly are an inspiration. Keep it up and give us another report in 6 months, don't wait a year.

I know your wife is proud of you and for you. She's smiling cause you're going to be around to grow into those golden years with her. Hell, I'm proud of you bro and I don't even know you.

Keep up the good work!

To the OP;
Fantastic achievment. It's a wonderful thing to take charge of your life! Best regards and "Keep on Truckin'".

Thank you everyone!

I really appreciate the comments.

It's been a fun process. I feel so much better in a number of ways. I'll continue down this road for the rest of my life. Healthy.

One funny development was just prior to Thanksgiving. I was going through my closet (at my wife's persistant urging and supervision :) ). All the oversized stuff had to go. I was able to hang on to a couple pairs of pants. I had to argue with her to keep 'em, too. She just couldn't understand why I needed the slack in the waist for IWB carry.

I found my old high school letterman's jacket. I earned this coat in 10th grade for football and wrestling. It's not the type with the leather sleeves....just the "new" nylon style that was rage in 1984. :D

The bosslady was shaking her head "NO" when I brought it out of the closet. I walked back into the closet like I was tossing it in the "out" pile. Instead, I slipped it on and walked back out.

She cracked up laughing and finally agreed that I should keep it as a cool keepsake of the football days.

Had to take an obligatory cheesey pic for my progress log.

Just leaving the gym after a tough workout. Keep tweaking my wrists and forearms....added some versagripps straps. Outside of gym dues and a comfortable pair of high quality exercise shoes, these are the best fitness investment I've ever made.

Versagripps.com A most excellent product.

My main buddy, who is loving my more active lifestyle:

He's growing like a weed. I'm 6'5". My son is 12 years old. I'll be looking up at him soon. Crazy growth spurts.

Family got together for the holidays. Sure was a great visit. Kid's were anxious and outa control while Dad was getting the camera set up. He kept them calm by letting them do a goofy pic at the end. It worked. Goofyness thrives with my family.

I've made it to the 120 lb mark and would like to go another 75 lbs. Sounds like a lot, but it's really not. There's a lot of fat left to burn.

I've found a great asset. It's an app that I can run from any smartphone, iPad, or PC. Myfitnesspal.com It makes traking calories and macros a breeze.

I'll be out of commision for a couple of months due to a hernia repair surgery coming up in two weeks.

I hope to make it to the 200lb mark by my September birthday...even though I'll be in recovery mode during most of February and March. Daily weigh in's, careful tracking of calories consumed and walking as much as I can will be order of the day while post-op.

Be well folks, be well. I hope that you all meet and EXCEED your fitness goals for 2012.

Laid up yet again!

Had surgery to repair two hernias on Monday.

Sore, sore, sore.....going stir crazy, too. Every time I get the pain meds in my system I will walk around some....but pay for it later.

Sitting up for more than two hrs isn't in my game yet.

Once these wounds heal and I get the green light from my surgeon, I will be really focusing on strengthening my torso. Already had a prior abdominal hernia surgery (mesh inserted) in 2006.

Need to build abs of steel to prevent this ****!

So how is everything going almost one year later since your surgery? I hope all is well and that you are meeting your goals. Your story is truly inspirational and it took some courage to share it. It's amazing what we can do once we take control of our lives.

Have you been able to increase the miles you can run in one setting? How are the knees and ankle? Hope everything has improved. Also what are your fitness goals for this year? Reason I ask these questions is that I don't know if you have ever tried or considered trying P90X. Not only is it a great fitness program, but it comes with a great nutritional program.

Stay well and stay healthy. Looking forward to hear about your progress.

What can I say that hasn't been said, other then Bravo Zulu!!!;)

6pack, thank you for all your posts. They are inspiring me to get
back to my fitness goals. A couple of years ago I lost a lot of weight. I
went from 290 lbs to 187 lbs in 7 months. Three of those were in a
cardiac intensive care unit & four in a rehabilitation unit. Not a diet I can
recommend! Its been a long hard road coming back from that. My weight
has started to creep up lately, so I'm getting busy. Thanks again for the inspiration!

good job and a lot of hard work on your side. keep it going.
