Best Self Defense Ammo .22?

I agree with most here, a good scatter gun with some high brass #4-#7 is probably a better choice for home defence. But like has been stated "never train to just shoot one time". I almost allways (when either plinking or practicing with bigger bores) use atleast one follow up shot if not two or three and I never try and do the same thing twice. Simply because the goal is to stop them. If you practice to pull your gun and pull the trigger twice and reholster it. What happens if you miss? Under low light and stress your a lot more likely to miss than playing in the backyard. Shoot till the threat is gone is my thoughts thow I may be wrong. But if your in my house and I'm protecting myself and my family you better believe if my 15-22 is closest and it takes 25 rounds to the face to put you down. Then ill just bave to explain it in court.. cause my family's safety comes first..

Heaven forbid they enter while I'm cleaning my 1919. I can hear the sherriff now "so exactly why did you shoot him 250 times"... this is a joke for those of you with no sense of humor..lol..

Well pretty much it depends on the size of the intruder, if he is a heavyweight or a lightweight, fat, built or skinny. How deeply layered is their clothes. If all fails just shoot for the eyes. You cannot go wrong there. Also if you only have a .22lr rifle or pistol than get you a baton also for backup when you empty all your rounds on the intruder and beat him till he can no longer fight back. If you have a .22lr pistol magazine fed get a tac light with a laser to blind the **** out of them. Shoot the groin area couple times after you blind them with the light then go for the best kill spot. Either the neck, head, or eyes. Make sure you move forward also towards the intruder because the closer you get to them more of the velocity of the bullet is going to hurt them. CCI velocitor round is the best because it mushrooms like a normal hollow point does for a bigger size caliber.

"Defensive .22LR" is an oxymoron. Sell the M&P15-22 and get something that works. Or just get something that works like an M&P9.

Headshots? You're kidding, right? The head is extremely hard to penetrate, even the Pope took a "headshot" and survived. The area around the bridge of the nose is about the only place you'll get penetration. If you can hit it. Target of last resort, but great gun store talk... ;)

RFK took a head shot and didn't survive, Reagan almost didn't make it.......just saying, if that's all you got, use it and try to put all the rounds in the same vicinity, even the shock trauma would hurt like all get out.
as an after thought, i have not found a subsonic that will not cycle my 15-22 with a can on it. they do have heavier bullet weight but are quite slower. i have had them bounce off antelope jacks at around 50 yards, but they have broken either ribs or legs and then bounced off.

Definitely CCI Stingers if you can find any. I'm pretty sure they are the most powerful 22 round available.

CCI Stingers... I do have quite a few boxes of mini mags too but I like the stingers better.

The fastest ammo that is reliable in your 15-22, is best for defense IMO.

having that said, the .22lr - no matter how much better than other options that aren't guns - is a poor caliber choice for home or personal defense. Anyone buying just one gun with defense in mind is better off with something else, a shotgun being at the top of the list.

My sister and her husband in Colorado have a P22 that they carry for encounters with coyotes while walking their dog. They use CCI stingers... Though in all honesty, most rounds would do well in scaring off smaller predators or at least having them run off and die hours later from internal damage.

Realistically, with the price of 22lr these days, a cheap shotgun will only cost you an equivalent of 3-4 bricks of 22lr ammo

I currently have federal high velocity and cci minis loaded into my magazines for my home defense. I know .22 is not the best for home defense, but its all i own as of now. So any ideas on what ammo I should keep in my mags to get the best stopping power?

Re:OP. The very best .22 LR ammunition for SD/HD is CCI Mini-Mags or Aguila HP. I have fired this stuff extensively in my 18-3 as well as a RIA 1911-A1 using a Marvel .22 LR conversion unit. Function, etc., has been 100% perfect... as good as a Glock!

Unless and until human beings are issued with armor plate, they will all be highly vulnerable to holes made by all sorts of things including ... bullets. Now, when it comes to such holes, a bigger hole is always preferable as it is usually more conducive to dropping the blood pressure of an assailant. That of course has a very calming effect on such people. However, when it comes to holes, size really doesn't matter a whole lot. A .22 LR bullet ... or maybe a couple of .22 LR bullets, punched into the vitals of an assailant will be extremely effective in helping them settle down and get peaceful. They may even go prone. You never know!

My 1911 w/ the Marvel conversion holds ten rounds. In just a flash it can be reloaded with another 10 round magazine. It is a typical 1911 frame, easy to use even under stress. A 15-22 can be loaded with either a OEM 25 rd. magazine or a ProMag 32 round magazine. If necessary it can be reloaded about as fast as the 1911... maybe faster.

I've been shot at one time in my life. I didn't stand there and try to do a mental calculation as to what caliber was being fired at me. For that matter, I didn't care what firearm was being fired. I put lots of real estate between me and the idiots with the guns until I could reach cover. If you need a SD/HD firearm, a .22 LR pistol or rifle will work... maybe even better than some would suppose. If it is ever necessary to use the firearm for SD/HD., it is very doubtful that the assailant(s) will stand around and have a discussion or share opinions as to what they think about you using a mere .22 LR pistol/rifle to settle them down.

One thing to remember is that allot of people have neighbors and shooting a high powered rifle may penetrate the walls and find your neighbor, oops. In a urban enviorement a 22lr may be just what you need because penetration up close is good and the neighbors have a better chance of survival. Just a thought.

Unless you research your ammo purchases for your weapons first before buying. There are perfect options for an "urban" environment that would not penetrate through your walls.

Cheapo apartment complexes... That's a different story.

I shoot plastic toy wheels and burn barrels with mini mags from about 20 25 yards and it only leaves a dent in certain thickness/strength of plastic/burn barrels. Cheap brick blazers pierce through every time. I don't trust mini mags after 200 rounds of the same result, a little ding is all it puts in the material. I know people are gonna have something to say arguing but just my experience. I'll go with penetration, accuracy and reliability with my gun and that's blazer. Funny

Just as a side note so you don't sell the .22 LR short for serious social work.

The Navy SEALs have special Ruger Mark II pistols in their inventories for clandestine work. These specially-darkened stainless steel pistols were provided to them by contract in 1987 and 1988. A non-standard strengthened and thinner front sight base was used, probably doubling as a bayonet-style stud to utilize a "slip on and twist" suppressor. Very few, less than 100, are in civilian hands from a contract overrun.

a .22 can be a good round to defend yourself w/, just gotta shoot for the head, anything less than that, you prolly just pissed them off, I'm defending my home w/ a Saiga 12

You are lucky that you can own the Saiga. In my liberal infested state we cannot have any Ak types including the Saiga. I do have a Mossberg 500 Tactical Cruiser that I like and will get the job done if need be.

Best .22 self defense ammo?
Anything with a .220 Swift headstamp.

The best Gun is the one that you have on you at the time.
I can put 10 rounds of 22LR in a man faster than I can reach down and grab my 9mm Pistol. After seeing what 22LR can do to varmints I am pretty sure that after 10 rounds the threat level will be minimal.
