Birth of a Smith and Wesson

I saw that when I attended the Academy in 03; I sat and stared at it for 30 minutes, but never thought to take a picture - and I was in the evidentiary photography class. Dad always told me: "just because you send a ******* to school, there's no guarantee you'll make a race horse out of him." I am pretty sure he was talking about me. :-)

That is just too cool.

I'm surprised the NRA or the SWCA doesn't ask them to be allowed to professionally photograph it, make a poster print out of it, and sell it to members. Maybe combine it with a photo spread of the assembly line or departments, and the old factory. Do it in four-color offset on heavy paper. I'd buy one, that's for sure.

Maybe get Roy Jinks to sign it. Find some of the older S&W workers and get them to sign it and write what department they worked in.

Shoot, I bet the thing would sell like hotcakes.

Thanks for posting. I love the design and manufacture of mechanical devices. Some genius thought went into that.

I've done several short term stints as an instructor at the FTU teaching the New Agent Trainees how to shoot, and I am back for FI recertification every 4 years. I walked past that board several times a day and never did photograph it! I should be back in Virginia next month. Maybe I'll remember to snap a good photo.

I agree, a poster-sized photo of that display, suitable for framing, would sell like iced tea in hell. I'd buy two, one for me and one for my son and his boys.

Well, S&W made at least 2 of these, and I'm sure there are more, somewhere. This pic was taken in the lobby of S&W in Aug of 1980 when I visited the factory and took the tour. Things were a lot more at ease back then. This was hanging on the wall, just inside the door to the then lobby, adjacent to the gift store.

If you look closely, you can see my "young" reflection in the glass.
Fast forward 32 years. I took the tour again, about 2 years ago. I saw this board hanging on the chain link fence which encloses the Performance Center area. I told the tour guide that I had seen this years ago and had taken a picture in the lobby. He said as far as he can remember it has always hung where we saw it. Unfortunately I couldn't get another pic due to current security restrictions, but it was still there!
Here's some other pics I took that day.

Not much has changed, except a little more security these days!
