Blinking neighbors cats

OK, I haven't gone through the whole thread, so i don't know if someone mentioned it...

Most cats do not like mothballs so try putting those in areas the cats like to get into, like flowerbeds. Also, when my cat escapes outside all I have to do is hose him and he brings his black furry butt back inside post haste.

The other thing is, you have some irresponsible pet owners. NO animals, cats included, should be outside roaming free. Life expectancy of cats is only about 4 years when they go outside. They are called HOUSEcats for a reason. That's my rant. Feral cats outside are another thing entirely, or barn cats in the country, but pets...no. Anyway my rant's over. Someone who really loves their cat won't let them roam outside. Too many cars to get hit by, things to eat that will poison them, neighbors annoyed by uncontrolled animals, exposure to diseases, predators like coyotes...kitty needs to be inside. Irresponsible pet owners burn my hide.

we have a problem with strays in my neighborhood. I trap and take to shelter or animal control, depending on the cat, after I post "found cat" signs. I found a 3 legged little girl roaming outside last week. She is due to be picked up by her owner. She was out of town and told her son not to let them outside. Poor kitty was outside in this record heat trying to outrun traffic with not all her legs...grrr.

I had a door to door sales rep asked me what I feed my cats. They are very large (not fat, but when they rub my legs, the top of their backs are almost to my knees) so she was actually scared. I told her I feed them door to door sales reps who show up without an appointment.

I only read the first 10 pages or so but I want to comment (if no one else has) that feral cats are a major threat to wild birds. Google "feral cats and birds" and see what pops up.

I just completed an analysis and found a reference that feral cats are a major threat to sage grouse in the west.

ps: I have a German Shorthair Pointer, so no cats in my yard. Quail, however................

I guess we are lucky here, never had a problem with any stray, feral or pet cats, too many oriental resturants I suppose! We do have a large flock of black birds that roost in the oak tree in the front yard, they are especially fond of doing their business on the wife's car, any suggestions on how to get rid of them? I would drop the old 12 ga on them but the city frowns on that and somebody might think I was shooting a cat and you see how much trouble that has caused!

which is why I have them trapped, spay/neuter, and released at a feral cat colony...there are programs that do this.

I first started working this case in 2004. I retired in September of 2010 so I missed finally seeing justice prevail.

And example of just how twisted the thinking of some of these "animal people"/"hoarders" can be.

Cats still on hold from Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary, cannot be adopted - North Florida Herald: News

An unrelated group that is just as off base are the "Cat Nip" folks. These people catch feral cats neuter then and clip the tip of the ear so then can be recognized. Then they turn them loose where they were caught.

I was going to stay out of this, but I just have to voice in on this. I can't stand feral cats. I went ahead last year and took down the two bird feeders that held seed, the suet cage, and the humming bird feeders. It was like a feeding frenzy for the stray cat. Actually, I can't even say feeding frenzy since he just killed most of them and left the dead scattered around after kind of playing/mauling them. I won't shoot him for fear of some jerk neighbor reporting me. I can't trap him since he won't set foot in any I have tried. I called animal control and nothing happened. He pisses on the flower bed, my tires, and I have cat claw marks on my car from him hopping up and down. He uses the mulch around the trees and shrubs as his giant litter box. He likes to come up to the windows and yowl at night. He leaves dead things at the door. He killed a kestrel and left it on the sidewalk. This is year two of waiting for him to someday die, leave, or get picked up by animal control. I'm losing it. Moth balls, cat-away, and even ammonia have no affect on him. The stupid sonic toy is a joke. I am forced to endure a feral cat for inability to not break the law. I am ruled by a feral cat. I am not happy.

My dogs don't climb on their cars or defacate in their yards. Why should I have to put up with this stupity? If my "Kids" did that you'd bet I'd get in some kind of heat. I live in a poupulated area, any sugestions? Now don't get me in to much trouble!

Take a deep breath and learn to live with it. Even in the country you'll have feral dogs and cats, plus coyotes, coons, squirrels, etc messin' with your stuff.

If you retaliate you'll start a war with your neighbors, and then everybody loses.

Just my 2 cents. :)

I catch lots of cats in a large havahart trap that's in my back yard.
Then relocate near where you work.

Feral cats are the WORST thing for the enviroment animal wise. They kill everything they can, and after the food is gone, die a long slow painfull death of starvation.

Better to put them down.

Spade or neuter is the answer to overpopulation. As to the issue of the neighbor's cats in your yard: check with local authorities. Some cities have leash laws that also apply to cats. If not, a rubber band gun or slingshot, or a good supply of tomatoes.

I understand your pain, but it was a nighbor's indoor cat she let outside that killed all our chipmonks and baby wild rabbits. A good tallking to with a threat of "goodbye kitty" in a nice way helped, but continually harrassing the cat ended up working. Everytime I saw it in my yard I threw something at it or ran after it yelling. It eventually learned to stayed on the right side of the fence, and when I go over it wants me to pet it non-stop.

The irony of the story is it was a stray I caught years ago and when I asked to borrow the neighbor's cat carrier for transport to the pound, she saw it and wanted to take it in, and I said okay. That cat has the life of Reily now!

A neighbor in a town we moved from years ago put out a pan of antifreeze to solve his issues with feral cats in the neighborhood. I reported him as this is a slow very painful death as it eats their stomach out and they die of internal bleeding. The cops told him to stop, which he did thankfully.

This was much to cruel and not befitting any animal - even pests.

I would advise you to do the live trap - then call the local shelter and turn it into them - owner can go get the cat back - first time is free - next time there is a charge - then there is larger charges for additional times. Sooner or later the owner is going to catch on that you are going to trap and turn in this cat every time you get the chance. They will do something about it when it hits their pocket. Best of luck to you.

Conibear trap, bend trigger wire up and add a chunk of Starkist tuna.
Its a last meal they never get.

I disagree, if you live around coyotes and fox, feral cats don't last long. I like to be able to see my neighbors and know that they are there but not hear them. We don't have feral cats around for long, and I don't bother them if i see one passing through. Odds are I won't see it again.

Wow, 20 pages and 2 years! Could've been a bear thread. On topic, though, we have a lot of coyotes, mountain lions and a few fox here, keeps the feral cat population in check to some degree, but there are still a lot of them, as well as a number of kind-hearted, but misguided, people who feed them, fueling their reproductive capacity. We have a name for house cats whose owners let them out at night "to play" - Coyote Crunch.

Let's just put this thread to rest.

The Whisper is very effective, but I've all but retired mine now that I've gotten a Stoeger X-20 Suppressed in .22. Even quieter!
