Yesterday I bought a used 686 and am wondering if the grips on it were stock. From poking around online I didn't see any 686's w/ these grips and they are S&W. It's a BETxxx serial number and if the grips are stock I assume that would make it's DOB between '92-'94.
I don't own a DA revolver and have always lusted after 686's, so when I saw this one I had to have it. It's in great shape, not a mark or scratch on it. I can't wait to test drive it tomorrow.
I had only planned on buying some ammo and it kind of followed me home.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Those grips look identical to those on my M17, 22 Long Rifle K-frame that was given me in the early 1990s.
Serial number is BHN 1###
My gun is blued, 6-inch barrel, full length underbarrel lug, with Target Trigger, Target Hammer and SB (Standard Barrel?).
The box shows the grips (or Stock) as CS. Presumably this is Combat Stocks?
Anyway, my M17 has the same stocks. Oddly enough, the owner's manual with it has the M17 on the cover with oversized square butt grips.
No mention of the finger-grooved stocks in the manual.
I removed the finger groove stocks and put oversized square butt grips on it for years. But recently, I put the original CS grips on it. Haven't decided which fits me best but the CS grips appear to be winning.
I'm growing into them.

I'm not an expert but these Combat Stocks date to the late 80's-early 90's. I think they were Smith's answer to the aftermarket finger groove grips like Pachmayer and Hogue. They were an improvement over the target grips but they never fit my hand very well. Hogue felt like they used my hand as a model.

You couldn't have made a better choice. With that one you don't even need another one. I would definitely pay a premium price if I ran across one like that.

No! Those are definately not stock grips! You'll pay a cr@p load more for custom medalion grips. You did well to jump on that my friend. My 686 is my favorite in my collection and I wish MY grips were that nice!Happy shooting to you!
