Bought an ugly Colt

I, too, have a Colt Cobra. It dates to 1958 and has "Detroit Police" stamped on the backstrap. It has about 80% coverage from being carried, but mechanics are hardly used.

I use it for CC and if it was "pretty", it wouldn't get its outings.

I never bought an ugly Colt before. I did date several ugly women in my lifetime, but I never married one of them. Does that count?

I would sent it home to Colt. They will make it look like it just came out of the box! As long as the gun is in otherwise good shape, I'd invest the $250
or so and wait the time they take to refinish it. That gun just wouldn't look right with Duracoat IMHO, but then again I am "Old School" about most things.

IMHO (other than maybe Doug Turnbull) no one will refinish a Colt like Colt!

I have a blued Cobra from 1956 that looks MUCH worse then yours. But it works just fine. So I'd just leave it "as is."

Colt won't refinish alloy guns. The barrel has to be removed to re anodize the frame. If the frame cracks during barrel removal/installation they have no spares.
Leave it like it is. Please don't duracoat it. I'm looking for just such a gun in that shape. Otherwise my like new, blue '74 Cobra goes into the carry rotation this fall.

AN UGLY COLT?

Until just before they went belly up they NEVER made an ugly gun. Their bluing was (wait for it) legendary. and nickel is about the best finish one could ask for, IF DONE CORRECTLY! whoever owned that gun abused it, then tried to cover it up with a horrible nickel job IMO. If you don't like it send it to me, I'll make a good home for it.

You can powder coat or anodize aluminum but painting / duracoating won't adhere well to aluminum unless you anodize first.

I'm in the leave it as is camp but if you absolutely must, powder coat it. You can even use a clear powder coat to protect the metal without changing the appearance too much.
