Well I have been eyeing the J frames since I bought my first revolver 2 years ago (a Taurus). I liked the revolvers but went back to semis. I found a S&W 649 357 mag. at a local pawn shop that was clean with no visible scratches. Looks like the previous owner took very good care of it. Looked it over and placed it on layaway. Can't wait to get it and shoot some rounds through it. I'm sure it will not be my last! All my friends rag me because I'm 30 and not a big Glock guy like everyone else. It's the same model as pictured.

Thanks, yes I'm sure I'll find that out, yes I'm positive that I will be owning several more J frames.

J-Frame -

Welcome and thank you for making an excellent choice!

You will find your little gun is capable of being very accurate and won't jam like your friends' Glocks do:D.

Regardless, it's likely this one will only be your first S&W - not your last.

Enjoy it!

Congrats on your acquisition! If you appreciate craftsmanship and design, the revolvers will grow on you, especially the older ones.

I was actually contemplating the same model variation when I was in the market for a 357mag carry snub. However, the small J frame and the coil spring action eliminated the 649. Still wouldn't mind trying one out sometime cause they look like fun shooters, but maybe not with magnums.

That is a great find, particularly in that condition. You will love shooting it. That is a classic, and those grips look comfortable. I love my S&W revolvers. In fact I got rid of my Colt Pythons since I preferred Smiths more.

I don't know what Taurus revolver you have but I haven't been disappointed with mine in any major way. I have two, myself: a Taurus Custom Shop 605 J frame with a Ported Barrel, upgraded trigger and bright mirror polished stainless finish and a Taurus 22LR/WMR convertible Tracker. I've had good luck with those two. The problem is the resale is pretty poor on Taurus, and demand is pretty low in many people's eyes.

Thanks CDR_Glock, I had the basic cheaper Taurus .38. I liked it and never had a problem with it. I have a Taurus PT92 and love it. I have nothing against any other manufacturer I have just had a thing for Smiths revolvers. Planning on adding a few more to the safe over time.

My neighbor, son, & shooting buddy, all have Glock 19's. I can shoot them OK, but have no desire to own 1. I traded my last poly gun off in March for a 686-6, 5" Pro-Series. NICE! I have the DESIRE to own MANY SMITHS! Bob

Great Choice

That is a great choice for a first gun, but wait until you get your hands on a K-frame!
