Welcome to the Forum. Too bad it had to be with a problem instead of finding your grail gun. Please let us know what S&W determines the problem to be. I have sent them a gun which they moved the sights to center and said it was fine, 4 months later they sent a new gun because the frame had been drilled off center. It's been fine for the last 20 yrs. Problems with other guns over the last few years have been corrected quickly- 1-2 weeks. We all can be 1 shot away from a jam, sights falling off, etc. Be Safe,

I have a Shield 9mm with at least 800+ rounds using factory and mostly reloads from LGS. No issues what so ever.

OK. Smith and Wesson called me yesterday to inform me that they've replicated my failure with several types of ammunition and could not pin point the exact reasoning as to why the gun is jamming so they replaced the slide and barrel and gun operated flawlessly. They even overnight shipped it for me.

I'm surprised they called you. Most of the time we just hear about parts being replaced, but never hear what they found or did.

Congrats on the fix.

Stay Safe

S&W factory should be contacting me today or on Monday regarding my shield. I'll keep you posted sir.
I think if you advise Smith & Wesson that your intention was to carry this off duty and you no longer trust this pistol to protect your life____they'll send you a new replacement pistol....
From an old cop (Ret) to a new one,
Stay safe.

No problems with my Shield 9. Over 700 rounds of various factory ammo using FMJ - Geco, Fiocchi, Sellier and Bellot, Blazer, PPU, and Remington; also use Hornady critical duty and critical defense.

I find that poll flawed. The choices assume your shield has problems. The two I own have been flawless.

Shield repaired

I received my shield back from Smith last Friday. I brought it to the range Saturday and tried it out to see if it would give me any more problems. I ran two mags through it with no problems at all. Smith didn't say on the repair sheet what they did to it. But, it works. Like I said in an earlier post, I want to use this pistol as a carry weapon and it needs to work. If you have a problem, Smith will fix it in record time. All I'm saying.

Slide Jam

I had the same trouble. Brand new gun, first mag. third round..slide jam! Toss it back in the range bag, take it home and clean her. Few days later, same thing, locks back. A good slap to the back of the slide put her back in action. Not ready to make her my carry gun. I have two M&P's and love them. Right now I'm not talking to my shield. My carry is a Sig 939.

I've had a similar issue with my new Shield 9mm. Cleaned the gun and went to the range. On the 3rd round I fired the slide locked back to the rear and would not budge. I removed the mag and basically forced it forward which freed it up. Tried a different mag and same result. This happened a total of 4 times within 25 rounds shooting both winchester white box and blazer brass. Twice I disassembled the gun to check recoil spring alignment but it was fine. Also I had two failures to return to battery completely. I had to push on the slide to close it. I wasn't limp wristing the gun. Yes the slide totally locked up to the rear and separately it failed to return to battery. I shot another 100 or so rounds with no problems. Very disappointing for a gun with such high praise from everyone to have these problems right out of the box.

So I called S&W today and spoke with someone. Told him what happened & he said the same thing happened with his shield when it was new & he said it needed to be broken in with about 300-400 rounds. Hmm, just didn't sit well with me. He did also say if it continues to jam then I can send it in to them. Not sure what I'm gonna do. If I'm going to carry this it needs to be 100%. I will probably take it back to the range & see how it does. But I feel like I may have got a lemon based on so many people saying they've never had a problem. I have a feeling i may be sending it in to S&W before it's all over with.

Thumb?

Hello all. I'm new to posting stuff on forums. I recently traded in my Shield .40 for a 9mm Shield due to my primary weapon at work being a Glock 17 which is 9mm and I want my back up weapon to match my primary's ammo. I'll try to keep the following list of events in order to avoid confusion to what had happened.

I purchased my new Shield 9mm and brought it home to give it a thorough cleaning. That same afternoon I load up the car to head to the range and put my new Shield through a little torture test so I don't encounter any weapon failure's during my qualification and gain a little trust in my new gun. With me I brought along 450 rounds of various ammunition. Remington, American Eagle, certified reloads, Winchester, Speer, Hornady Critical Defense and Hornady Critical Duty +P (which I would shoot last to ensure the gun can more than handle it).

Get to the range and set up an array of random targets. Load up my weapon with the standard Remington fmj rounds. Fire my first round and hit my mark, wow this thing beautiful (I'm thinking in my head). Fire my second round and hit my mark again but this time it felt a little funny hmmm it's jammed. The slide is stuck all the way to the rear. There was zero room for any movement.I'm thinking to myself that I'm sure it's nothing and probably just a fluke... I release my mag and begin trying to clear the malfunction. No success. I had to bang the barrel on the range table while also wiggling the slide and finally it popped back into battery. I fire my third round, same exact problem. I swapped out my ammunition and fired a fourth round with no problems. Fired a fifth round same problem. Sixth round same problem. Seventh round same problem. I'M DONE.

I brought the gun back to where I purchased it (rimes with Cabelas) and they tried to act like they knew what the problem was and I kind of wen't off on them explaining the application in which this gun is going to be used and that I wan't them to send it back to Smith and Wesson with out another word.

5 weeks later I receive my gun with a note that reads "slide repaired passed range test" and head back out to the range. Same scenario as before. I'm all excited to shoot my remaining 400 ish rounds through this bad boy and restore my faith in Smith and Wesson. Fire an entire magazine with no problem's. Reload fire again and boom! Same thing as before omg... I was able to fire all the 400 ish rounds I brought and encountered roughly 100 failures with all of them being the same with the slide locking all the way to the rear and having to bang on the barrel to get it go back into battery.

Instead of dealing with the jackoff's at Cabelas again I went directly to Smith and they arranged a shipping label for me and I shipped my gun back to the factory for the second time. I shipped it on Monday 6/13 so I haven't received it back yet but when I do I'll keep everyone posted! Please share your thoughts with me on this... Thanks!
Hey, fellow cop___ I've heard of this happening with several shooters with different pistols. Using the two hand hold it's possible
your thumb is pushing up the slide lock as you're firing and this will cause the slide to lock back.
Being an old retired LE I practice strong hand only and have never had this happen.
These thumbs pushing up on the slide lock (unintentionally) will
certainly cause that slide to lock back.
G'luck and hope this helps.
