I had a great day shooting yesterday until it came time to pick up the brass. The ground has gotten further away and my back hurts.

I shoot outdoors, but our club has old commercial carpet on one of the ranges. The other 2 are grass. I am picking up mostly (99%) 9mm and .45 brass.

What do you like for picking up?

I use one of the snatch and grab tools they give you when you get a hip replacement. (you're not allowed to bend all the way over for 4 months) It's one shell at a time into a coffee can, but they are very easily used and can pick up a small pill from the bathroom floor. I keep a half a dozen of them stashed around the house, garage, sheds and trucks.

I shoot mostly outdoors on dirt and grass.

+1 on the Brass Wizard. We've been using them on our indoor range and they work great. They do require a relatively smooth surface and don't work on dirt or grass. You should be fine if you are picking up brass off of a carpet.

I use a little item that is sold at the local hardware store for picking up pecans. It is just about identical to the Brass Wizard. It is a little wood handle w/ a wire basket gizmo that you roll along. The pecans or brass slip inside and are easily extracted into a bucket, bag, etc. HTH. Sincerely. bruce.

I have seen headlines lately about more people switching from smart phones back to flip phones. Maybe we will also get a trend back to well crafted guns that don't throw your brass in the dirt

(My only on-topic advice is a bed sheet on the ground).

I plan on using a tarp or some such the next time I go to my local club. There is so much brass on the ground there that looking for my brass is nearly impossible.

Recently most of my brass recovery is from the 20 gal. can that folks deposit their sweepings in. I do spend some time picking up live rounds in front of the line and of course those pesky little 32 ACPs.

Isn't that what kids and grandkids are for??? :D

I'll second the bedsheet or tarp approach. It works very well when you're out in the open. At the range, I set a brass catcher on the table - looks like a fish net on a stand. Creedmoor and others have them for sale. I don't shoot at indoor ranges. My guess is there's no room to set up a brass catcher, so I have nothing to suggest there.

I have a brass wizard, but (on grass) doesn't work except on .45 or larger. The 9mm you will miss 80% of them. I use the long handle "grabber" that Jaguargolf mentioned. Slow but useful. With practice it isn't bad.

I bet you are right Brucey i have 2 garden weasels.I will have to remember to take them to the range.Tired of using their sawed off broom and broken dust pans anyway.Be nice if small one would pickuo 22 cases.

I've got a 12'x12' tarp one of the thinner cheap ones that's like medium brown on one side. I just lay that down on the ground beside shooting bench or standing area. Sometimes you have to adjust a bit for different guns brass sling.

Then pull it up sliding brass to the middle then just let it slide into a 5 gallon bucket. It will collect the majority of em. Then maybe pick a few that make it off my catcher.

Nut Wizard Home

I use one of these, slow but effective. Our range has a concrete (outside) floor so most can be swept up.

I uses this contraption whenever I remember to bring it along. It picks up dirt from the grass range, but I'll dump it onto a bench, separate whatever I want to keep and sweep the rest back into the grass. It really saves my back.

Get an attachment that fits on the gun or you hand and catches the brass as it comes out. I have on for my ARs. Works 99% of the time. Some times I have to readjust. I have seen some that fit on your hand or will fit to a tac rail underneath.

Just sayin

I use my 16 year old granddaughter when I can get her attention.

It was much easier when she was 13.

Unfortunately, nowadays I’m usually relegated to bending over and picking it up myself.

I’ll keep my eyes open for a brass wizard.
