Bullpup V3

Thanks Telero for help in clarifying this up. I did read that I cannot sell the one I made or give it away. I will need to look into this further.

Bullpup V3 at the range

Went to the range today and test fired the V3 prototype.

Started out with one round to see if it would fire.
I loaded three rounds to make sure it would cycle properly and not go full auto. Hay you never know.
I then loaded half a mag and let her rip and did it again and then checked everything to be sure nothing strange was happening.
Finally went to full mags and dumped 300 rounds down range. The most fun I have had in a long time. Other than the fact the ammo was old crappy bulk Remington golden bullets and failed to fire about 20 times it ran flawless. Tried one handed with the butt tucked between my arm and side, two handed with the red dot, and iron sites. Yea, blasted away rapid fire. Trigger felt just like a lighter factory trigger.
Had a friend with me to try firing it and he did well considering he has never fired a rifle before. He also wasn't the best photographer but I am attempting to attach the link , hope it works.

If I come across the information about being able to sell or give away the one you made I'll post a link to it...couldn't find an ATF source to cite right now. But I believe it comes down to intent.

Edit:
OK, I couldn't find the original ATF pdf they had posted dealing with home made firearms, but I found a couple other things. There were some questions asked in an opinion letter that were answered, but those are only applicable to the person that wrote in asking for the opinion. Here is the answer letter from the ATF:

Basically, you can build your own that's not for sale, and you don't have to put a serial number of the other required information on it that would normally be required. It is recommended that you do. If you do decide to sell/transfer it, again, it should not have been your original intent, but at that time you would need mark it with all the normally required information.

Question 4 in this ATF FAQ covers it. http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/firearms-technology.html
Specifically at the end of the answer:
Individuals manufacturing sporting-type firearms for their own use need not hold Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs). However, we suggest that the manufacturer at least identify the firearm with a serial number as a safeguard in the event that the firearm is lost or stolen. Also, the firearm should be identified as required in 27 CFR 478.92 if it is sold or otherwise lawfully transferred in the future.

In trying to use off the shelf AR parts I used the AR mag release. It actualy works no to bad. By grabbing the gun just behind the mag, thumb on the left and all fingers together on the right, your index finger lands exactly on the release button. Now it isn't ideal, but it works and is fairley quick. An ambi release is like $80 so it is difficult for me to justify that right now but I think some would work like the one with the lever, just put on backwards. The ideal button location is just in front and just below the release bar on the left.

Looks great. I wish I wasn't left handed. Even with the brass deflector, I'm a bit concerned about putting my face so close to the ejection port. Actually, I would probably just deal with shooting it right handed.

Hi.

I'm new to the forum but I own a 15-22 (and love it) and I am a big fan of bullpup rifles. I just stumbled across your first post about this and spent some time reading through each thread getting caught up on your progress. Your latest version is looking really incredible, and its great that it can be switched back and forth with the original lower.

Any idea what you would charge for the 80% lower when you finish? I would be very interested in owning one of these. (Sorry if this question has already been answered, I sorta skimmed through some sections).

Yoda1710, thanks for allowing me to share my project with you. I love Bullpup's also and is why I did this and I would love to be able to give everyone the opportunity to own their own Bullpup. You have to know I have spent 1,000 of hours conjuring up this idea and have spent more money than I intended to but at this point I can say it was well worth it. I am still working on some modifications so the project is not complete so I don't have a complete idea of what I will need to produce. I can say that my goal is to sell these at a reasonable price which I figure is between $250 - $300. Now at that price I would need to sell at least 3,000 units. Do you think the market is there for this?

I believe there is a market, but you will have to reach the market to sell them. Selling to a few of the big name suppliers is an alternative. I don't believe you would get triple digit sales from just this board... let alone 3,000 units.

I understand that its not complete, but thanks for the rough estimate.

I have to agree with turbo38gn. There is a market for it, but you will have to find a good way to reach the market. I doubt that you will be able to sell that many simply through this forum.

Have you considered a kickstarter project to help fund the remaining design work and/or get production started when the time comes?

I'm curious how exactly you created this. Did you design it in autocad (or solidworks or some other solid modelling program)? And do you own the equiptment to actually manufacture it from that point or did you have it done by a prototyping company?

It would be interesting to see this done to a 5.56/.223 AR. Obviously the buffer tube would be an issue, but I believe Rock River (and maybe some others) make a piston driven AR that has no buffer tube. (don't remember what its called though).

The Bullpup was designed in AutoCad and cut on a CNC machine. It is not my machine and would be difficult to run more than a few on it so I would need to get my own CNC machine if it goes into production. I am not a rich man so the cost of starting this would be an issue. I do have some ideas but want to get the final design worked out first to get a better handle on the actual cost.

Rundover, I'm planing on picking up another 15-22 with hopes that this unit comes to market!

Thanks for all of your hard work, time, investment, and determination.

As for a name, I like Bull Shark.
