Do you know what happened 159 years ago this fall... back in 1850?

California became a state
The people had no electricity.
The state had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.

So basically nothing has changed except the women had real boobs and
the men didn't hold hands.

(Stolen from LouisianaJoe :D )

Ain't that the truth. And nobody was the ward of the Nanny State. :)

Unfortunately, you could replace "California" and "1850" with most any other state and corresponding date, and it would still ring true.

I did my about 40 year career in california. Went there at 19, left when retired. California is huge. Surprisenly it probley has about as much waste land and probley more than most the states. The majority of people there is crowded jammed up people and not much rual life relatively speaking. Yet tell somebody you lived in california and they immediately picture frisco, LA, or malibu! That probley accounts for 5 percent of the state! We have a girl friend here that was surprised when we told her we were republican. She was even more surprised when I informed her every friend I had back there and most acquaintances and most the guys I had worked with were also republican! I guess the underbelley of those big citys control the rest of the 95 percent of the state! Its a shame because somewhere in that state being so huge north and south, you can find beautifull examples of any type of geographic beauty that no other state can match! Like any other state a few people like probley old women in the sierra club that has never gotten in the wilderness has the influnance to dictate and stop life for the people in areas they probley never been to! Recently I heard the green weenies have ruined agriculter in a huge area of the san jaquiene valley, stopping the ranchers getting water and costing 85,000 farm labor jobs lost to save some 2" minnows somehow, somewhere! That is insane! Also watch what it does to produce prices! Get rid of the libs, greenies, illegals etc, and you couldnt find a better state to live!

Thank you, feralmerril for a little defense of my home state (I was born there and got relocated to Podunk, AR as a kid). I always hear people bashing California and saying it would be better off to slide into the ocean. Sometimes I think a solution for CA is to kick all the people out and turn it into one National Park because there are many beautiful areas to see.

As you say, it's a shame that a few bozos are in control and ruin it for the "normal" people there. I really ache for those ranchers who need the water-that is insane. Can't they relocate those silly minnows elsewhere?

Cajunlawyer-please pardon the hijack-you had a very clever joke. Thanks.

If I was smart like you, godlessgael, that's what I should have written. Thank you for the perfect summary of what I was trying to say above.

Long time locals think an awful lot of them moved up here (Seattle) starting in the late 70's/early 80's. Evidently the lower property prices and taxes attracted most. Unfortunately an awful lot of outlooks, view points, and preferences in governing styles and taxing authorities came with many that relocated? I'm afraid there's plenty of fruits and nuts to go around all along our west coast anymore! I mean what can you say about a downtown Seattle city park, that sought out and erected a statue of Lenin it acquired from Russia AFTER the fall of the USSR! (Apparently the parks commission was capable of reading tea leaves about our future?)

How's it feel to be Cali-fornicated?

Maybe I should stick around....the more the state goes into the dumper, the more libs leave and infect other states. Maybe no more libs left in the future.....hey, a guy can dream can't he?

Good one. :D I think it is about time to call Taco Bell and cancel my phone service, grab the American flag, turn out the lights, and get out of Florida. Do you fine people in Montana have room for a transplant.

You know whats funny? I am 68 years old, a native of wisconsin. As a youth I bummed, well worked, in about 9 or 10 scattered states across the nation. Wherever I went it was the same story line. Soon as I worked down south they called me "yank", new englanders hated all outsiders, Lousianna and texas everybodys daddy used to be champyeeeen boxer or rodeo rider of 1932, in wyoming every late comer was a "dude", years ago in mighigan and wisconsin they hated the southeners comeing up and takeing the jobs, in oregon they really hated californians, yet all my years there I seldom met anyone that was actualy born there. Watch the grapes of wrath, californians hated the oakies comeing in. (my folks also was in that deal in the 30s for a few years). My grandpa was german from russia, and dad said he was in habitual trouble whipping on every polock neighbor he could find! On the other end of it dad said they moved near a polish dominated town in wisconsin, gangs of polish kids would throw rocks at them. Dad and a older half brother took a team and wagon into town and a gang stoned them and uncle john whipped one so bad he later died! What can I say? People are and always will be territorial and prejudiced where ever you go. Sometimes with good reason too, I guess.
