Cake or pie?

Here is a cake I made a few years back - everything but the eyes are edible - the mid section is filled with pudding - the lower section is filled with ice cream. The hat is made from full Hershey's bars - the scarf is fruit rollups - the nose is a baby carrot - arms are chocolate coverage pretzel rods.

Each section is covered with rolled fondant - which looked great but I couldn't get it quite thin enough - so while technically edible - it was easier to just peel it off before eating the cake underneath.

Guys gobble this up, but women stay clear: I wonder why?

Portions are approximate, I use more in larger pie plates:

1 cup dark chocolate chips
1 cup milk chocolate chips
1 cup peanut butter chips
1 cup caramel chips
1 1/2 cup coconut, shredded or chopped
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1-2 cups evaporated milk
1 prepared graham cracker crust [I usually make my own and leave out the sugar]

Starting with the milk chocolate chips, I fill in layers from the bottom up, layering the chips this way

milk chocolate
caramel
coconut [reserving about 1/3 cup for top]
peanut butter
dark chocolate
nuts
last of coconut

Pour evaporated milk over chips, nuts, and coconut until milk is even with the top layer of dark chocolate. Bake at 350 degrees until all chips are melted and coconut is toasted. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

To be totally decadent, put some whipped creme on the top!

Cut the pie with a sharp knife and make small servings because this pie is really rich.

This pie was really popular when we were in the AF. Folks were running and moving and weren't really worried about the calorie count.

My wife bakes like a driven maniac- left to right is a deep dish shortbread crust apple pie- first time effort and a keeper- a pumpkin cake with apple cranberry and nut filling and a chocolate pecan pie. I am a pie man. But I do enjoy some cakes, I have an aunt who makes the best Peter Paul and Mounds Cake in the world. I also like cheese cake. But if you ask me cheese cake is more like a pie than a cake. But back to the pie, my favorite chocolate creame pie.

And pie is just cake with "stuff" in it! Nothing wrong with a slice of pound cake with fruit on top.

I do love hot apple pie with either cinnamon ice cream or blueberry-cheesecake ice cream on top.

When I'm done with this joint I think I'll have all of it.

Anyone here like Schwartzwald (Black Forrest) cake? The best slice of cake I ever had (and I admit to having many over the years) was at a Bistro on the outskirts of Hamburg, Germany on Sat Sept 22nd? 2000 at approx 5:30 pm.

Your post reminds me of a true, funny story. Made a black forest cake for daughter's birthday; it was her favorite. After the party, left cake on table while I walked a neighbor home. Came back to find big hole in cake.

Told spouse, "Dog bit a hole in birthday cake!"
Spouse, "Not my dog!"

Just then, spotted dog stalking cake. Sneaked with spouse to doorway to watch. Dog gathered himself and leaped at cake. Spouse yelled.

It was funny watching dog backpedalling and doing backflip in air. It wasn't so funny when daughter found out that her birthday cake had to go into garbage. Almost had a dead dog.

Pie no less then 6, good is 4, best is 2. Cake is 6 pieces.

I agree-8 it too much, I can't eat 8 pieces of pie but I can handle 6.

I like good fruit pies.
Usually don't like the gooey pies like pecan, but I love key lime pie.


Why is KL a pie, but cheese a cake?
They're about the same.


When cooking to impress, I would make a 3 level cheesecake-key lime pie.

Graham cracker crust, a cheesecake, a layer of lemon curd, and a top layer of key lime..

Takes 2 days to make, but worth it.
