Can a cracked forcing cone be repaired?

IMHO the best way to fix a cracked forcing cone is to have the cracked portion cut off, have the barrel turned, creating a new forcing cone and threads cut. I had to have a model 28-2 repaired to fix the same problem and should only be done by a very competent gunsmith. Send it to S&W and let one of their master gunsmiths do the work. They are very reasonable. The gunsmith at S&W that did the work was Gene Sypek.

I can't see why this couldn't be done.
You'd have to shorten the ejector rod a bit to match,
but that barrel looks to me like it could be cut at the breech, recontoured and rethreaded, and the ejector rod cut to match.
My gunsmith did something very similar for me for about $125 or so if I remember right.

For what it is worth, I would never do a cosmetic repair to a gun barrel and neither should a qualified gunsmith. Sure it will look better and maybe not even be noticable, but that is the issue. Many years from now the revolver may be back on the market and I would never want something like that put in the hands of a shooter that does not know the gun's history. Maybe we should have a "Show Me the GunFacts"?
