Can this be fixed?

I realize that not everything we purchase is the way we expect it to be. The ding at the muzzle end doesn't seem like a big deal and I would be ok with that. However, the ding in the rib would bother me everytime I shot the gun. If it were mine, I would send it back to S&W and have them put a new barrel on the 686. Also, let's not be hard on the OP since I also missed things until I got home and gave it a more thorough look.
 
Just to be clear Pisgah, I bought the gun online. They wouldn't show me individual pics of the gun. Yes, preferably I would've liked to see the gun in person, sometimes that is not always feasible.

In that case, I make darned sure I have the right to return it if it arrives damaged.

Definitely needs a barrel replacement.

Yes, I imagine most of us have been down that road of not spending enough time at the dealer inspecting our new gun, only to get it home and give it a much more thorough "looking over" (usually in better light) and find a ding or canted barrel that ruins the excitement of the new purchase. It has happened to me.

More often than not, people might feel a little rushed in the gun store so as not to hold up the sales guy from helping other customers. The last gun I bought, about 6 months ago, I spent 25 minutes at the counter looking it over. Fortunately, they were not that busy that day, so it did not hold anyone up.
 
It's certainly possible that even though it's a new gun, it was handled roughly, even dropped, somewhere along the line in a shop, store, or by a dealer. Not saying those couldn't be factory defects...I'm sure they sure could. But they also could have happened post-factory, depending on where and from whom you purchased the gun.

Does no one look things over before they purchase?

That gun, if new would never make it out of the store if I were buying it.
 
Shotgungordo, no intention here to he hard on you. You've learned a hard lesson. Always thoroughly examine a gun before you buy it, and if you're doing an online transaction make sure you have the right to refuse it and return it before you pay for it . If they won't agree to that, turn down the deal. There are always more out there, even though it can sometimes be frustrating and time consuming to find the one for you. Guns that shouldn't get out of the factory sometimes do, and guns at faraway dealers or distributors do get damaged by careless folks who handle them.
 
I got to say guys,...I'm thoroughly impressed with Smith and Wesson's customer service. I received my gun in the mail a few weeks ago and they fixed everything. It was a no hassle situation.
 
They changed the barrel. RMA'd it for defect. At least, when customers do have issues with QC, S&W fixes it with no hassle.
 
looks like ALK 8944 was wrong. Im glad that Smith and Wesson took care of the problem for you.
 
I was looking at a new 686 that had some minor dings/scratched areas and pointed it out. They said it came that way. Really. I asked if there would be a price reduction in consideration and the guy rejected that idea, so I moved on. Found a flawless one at another shop that was even priced a bit lower and grabbed it up.
I'm sure the first one would have functioned as well, but I would have been bothered by the condition. New should be new.
