Canada has Banned Handguns

I think there is a general misunderstanding about the Canadian people overall. Most are fiercely independent and proud of their freedom. I expect this latest attempt at gun control will meet with serious and organized resistance from a lot of Canadians.

The last major push in Canada was C-96, requiring owner licensing and registration of every firearm as well as heavy restrictions on ammunition. The Canadian group Law-Abiding Unregistered Firearms Association (LUFA) resisted in multiple ways over several years, resulting in the new law being repealed and great embarrassment of the officials involved over massive cost overruns (while hiding and lying about the true numbers), very low compliance, and general incompetence in implementing the new law.

Public response to this new measure will be interesting to watch.

I went to college with a Canadian. He was astounded when he read our constitution, especially the second amendment. He was a pro-gun kind of guy and wished his country had such a thing. We can never rest and the tactics that the left have used to pit gun owners against the organizations that support the 2A have weakened our clout in the past few years. Oh, and the entertainment industry and news media have been working on conditioning the younger generations with anti-gun propaganda for decades. We can never rest.

Respectfully...

Canada is not a dictatorship. Like much of the rest of the world, they have a parliamentary system of government, and their Prime Minister can exercise certain authority and power within that system. They have a completely different view of government, and of citizens' rights, than we do.

Many European countries are the same way, and it's not just gun rights that are different. Laws on speech, religion, property rights, etc. vary greatly. (I remember the first time I took a German friend to Washington, D.C. There were several small demonstrations on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House -- which is a daily occurrence -- and he was amazed...that would never happen in Germany.)

Events like this remind me of the brilliance of our Founders, and how we need to be vigilant and protective of our rights. And it's not just the 2nd Amendment...as Pharmer pointed out, the Electoral College is what prevents a "tyranny of the majority" from running roughshod over the rest of us.

Other than individuals thumbing their nose at the law and transfering existing handguns, how exactly do you "resist" the 100% lack of handguns to purchase? It's rather easy to simply not register existing firearms, but it's difficult to overcome a scenario where you want to buy something and no store or vendor can offer it.

I seriously doubt many American-bought handguns will get smuggled there and find their way into the hands of otherwise law-abiding Canadians (not the criminal class---the people who could have bought guns a week ago). The juice just isn't worth the squeeze for either party. They will go without.

Well...thinking about the possibilities...

I think Canadians who want to do so will get around a ban on handguns pretty much the same way people anywhere get around bans on anything.

Smuggling guns or gun parts across the border...3D printing...illegal shipping of guns and/or gun parts...are just three of the ways I can imagine.

Government prohibitions on commodities people really want are always tough to enforce. The question here -- and we don't know the answer to this -- is how many Canadians who are not current gun owners really want handguns that badly?

I vote we let our friends and allies, the Canadians, handle their own affairs.

Over the world, most people really like and respect Americans; nearly all wish we would mind our own business.

Hear hear, and we'll handle our own.

Tired of hearing how the Europeans and the rest of the world do things so much better that us.

Our friends to the north need to vote out Trudeau and his corrupt Liberal party. Sadly, Trudeau can do a lot of damage until October 2025.

Totally up to Canadians if they put up with it. I do feel badly for folks especially in Western Canada.

My heart goes out to our neighbors to the North.

This isn't a 2A topic. While they're great neighbors, they aren't protected by our Bill of Rights.

Far too many posts dealing with socialized health care, general liberalism and an overthrow of their government have been deleted.
