Cannot recommend M&P pistols right now

I bet Glock is outselling the M&P line... yet anyone has been able to find glock mags for months. So much for the panic. Everyone arguing here seems to think one of three things: that there is no M&P magazine shortage compared to other major pistol manufacturers
And how many decades have Glocks been around? Could that have something to do with it?

Lol, no, I am not saying that. I am saying, S&W seems to be the only company that has to reserve all of their mags to be bundled with new guns. Hence, our complaints of their poor planning and ability to support existing customers. Have you read this thread at all? By the way, what does the shield selling like crazy have to do with M&P9 FS mags? Almost every M&P line has no mags available.

Yep, I did read the whole thread. So companies like Ruger, as I posted about earlier in the thread, are poor in their planning so much that certain guns are backordered for the next two years, as well? I seriously doubt it. Demand is exceeding supply. Why is that so hard for you to get? S&W is no different with their situation, and the same with Mec Gar. It's a simple as demand exceeds supply. Get used to it.

I propose that S&W begin shipping their M&P's contracted to all of the additional PD's who have recently come on board with only 1 magazine. Or maybe none for right now. Let them wait like we have to. Then they can supply all of the precious newbies with all of the magazines they want........... RIGHT NOW. Be safe out there folks! I'm stayin' in my house.

The lack of understanding of how a free market works by the OP is even more outstanding, and your complaints should be added to the list of First World Problems. Is the cord too short on your iPhone charger also?

If you truly think that S&W is letting you down, feel free to sell you gear and move onto the next brand you feel suits your needs. Find a platform which has been out a while and has a better supply situation. The 1911 platform comes to mind. Your Mec-Gar mag offerings you posted yesterday are weak support for your argument. All those platforms have been out for some time now and currently have nominal demand relative to the M&P.

Rewind to 1994, when the AWB was looming and Glocks were out about the same amount of time M&P's are now. $100 mags was not uncommon for these guns (remember that was also 20 years ago, like $160 today). Granted, a ban was enacted then and nothing is on the horizon now. However the shooting community has been conditioned somewhat by the political roller coaster we've experienced this last two decades, and this last go-around has hit us it particularly hard. Things are coming back, albeit more slowly than many would like to see.

I've been through this kind of scenario several times in the last 20+ years, and every time it's the same: demand increases, supply decreases, prices go up, sellers take advantage of that, and the recent buyers or fence-sitters that finally decided to buy are up in arms that stuff is not available or prices are double or triple what they are used to seeing. Folks can complain all they want but that is not going to change the supply situation.

If I've learned anything after living through times like this it's this: 1) Have patience, things will come back; 2) When things calm down and something's available at a good price, buy it, you can always use it some day or sell and at least get your money out of it; 3) Sellers take advantage of increased demand and higher prices. Whether you agree with the last part or not, keep in mind in the grand scheme of things that we don't absolutely need this stuff, given the current climate it's not like we are talking food or water or insulin or anything. Why should someone sell me something for $20 when someone else is willing to pay $50 for the same item? It makes no difference whether or not you agree with what others are willing to pay.

The $99 17-rd mags that 44mag.com that sold out in a short period of time is a classic example. There are those willing to spend that much so why should he offer them at MSRP? I bought stuff at 44mag.com and if I agree to pay the asking price I will continue to do so. A couple years ago he had them for way less that S&W's retail price and I added a few to the order I was making. I didn't need them at the time and in fact they are still in the package. And no they are not for sale, though I'm sure there some out there that will consider me a greedy b-----d for having mags that I'm not using and won't let go for $25.

Have there been times when I've been frustrated because I was unable to get something or asking prices were high? Absolutely. But not so much if I'm not dead in the water. In any case you make do with what you have until things improve.

I've been looking for mags for months just like the rest of you. I'm not pissed at S&W. I'm not going to badmouth them and tell people not to buy their products. I understand how these things happen and will wait until supply is high enough that prices come down. I had the chance to order from 44mag a couple times recently when they got stock but I don't want to pay that much over regular price. I can wait.

I did however, just order a promag for range use for $25 from Cabelas. We will see how well it holds up.

I take it by this statement that you think we are misreading your posts. So, what exactly is it that I haven't comprehended?

You stated that out of all the gun companies "S&W seems to be the only company that has to reserve all of their mags to be bundled with new guns." Can you back that up with facts or is this just supposition on your part?

I've been following this thread. I also snapped up some used mags from Bud's, the first mags I've seen that were reasonable enough for me to buy despite looking for months. I'm pleased as punch.
I have a theory, feel free to poke holes in it.
Suppose S&W had a contract to have a certain number of mags produced for them. The craziness starts and they are locked in a contract with no wiggle-room because MecGar is maxed out with other manufacturing demands. S&W is now forced to wait until they renew the contract and can press for more production to meet demand. (They may not even want to do this knowing demand could drop and that would leave them with a surplus of stock). So they may be making do with a current contract situation, funneling any extra mags that you or I might purchase into their gun sales because of surging demand. They've got no buffer in the current contract to allow for separate mag purchases, the extra gun sales are eating it up. We wait while they wait.

I have posted a want ad. I've even bumped it a time or two. Only one response and he didn't want to ship to CA. I don't blame him, but I still haven't found any 9mm mags.

No worries, I'm patient. After all, there are 113 posts now and I'm still here. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.
