If yes, which organization do you get your "coverage" from (I know they are legal defense funds/pools not "insurance" per say) and why?

If no, why not?

P.S. Sorry if this has been asked ad nauseum, I am newer here and did not see it in the sticky posts or first few pages.

I recently did a monthly defender plan with CCW Safe (for now) ... I read their terms of service along with the other major ones and felt they were best. That being said, after re-reading it there were some red flags that made me re-consider it. All of the defense fund policies had so many conditions for them to defend you that I wonder if I'd be just as good with a public defender if I met those conditions. Just curious what your thoughts were as I am starting to think I may cancel my membership with them. If I do cancel my membership, my plan is to make sure I leave no doubt that I legally defended myself if I'm ever forced to defend my family or myself with my firearm.

I don't.

I'm a retired lawyer who did criminal work for most of my career and I know whom to call and how to act. I also know a bit about how some of those insurance things select/assign lawyers and...well, I'm not saying any given insurance plan is wrong for many folks - but it's not for me.

Generally speaking it is a waste of money.

Normally the attorney's that they say that they have on .24/7 call out to "rescue you" They are attorney's that are hungry for work. Contract employees if you will. Good lawyers do not work this way. Just sayin.

Wife and I have it. Texas law shield at this time. We wouldn’t leave the property without it. Be careful with what you choose, some have lots of add-ons and caveats in the policies. Some do criminal only, no civil.

Read the fine print. Some are only reimbursement policies AFTER and only IF you are found not guilty.

The developer of my subdivision is a big wig criminal lawyer in Raleigh. His father is very well connected.
I have his cell #.

Having said that, I am looking at the various plans. I travel often, so it’s always nice to be able to get a lawyer who knows the muckitity mucks where you are in trouble.

I have had CCW Safe Defender plan with Civil Liability for some time. Spent many hours looking at all the plans offered by all the different companies.
For me it came down to if a situation ever arose that required the use of a firearm, I wanted someone to call that could provide guidance, legal assistance and financial support that I otherwise could not afford.
CCW is the only service that (as far as I know) has successfully defended a client in a self defense shooting. If I recall, they spent $300,000 on the case. That’s money I don’t have!
I pray I will never need it, but I sleep better at night knowing I have it. JMO

I’ll add that as a teacher I can’t afford a lawyer on retainer. I also don’t know any local lawyers as some of you do. I know some great lawyers but not in my area.

That being said I don’t carry much outside my house as many of my destinations are sadly gun free zones like my school or gym or bar if I drink CCW safe doesn’t cover me. The only times I carry are walking my daughter because she is half Asian and I worry about her being targeted.

Welcome to the Forum Goudy686

I have had a Smith & Wesson J-frame with me almost every day of my life since 1980

Carry Insurance is one of the greatest inventions the Insurance Industry has come up with for themselves.

Just thinking about all those millions and millions of Pro 2nd Amendment Americans(not LEOs) who carry weapons, mailing their monthly check to their Concealed Insurance Company's office, proves to me how clever the Insurance Companies are

When it comes to Pro 2nd Amendment Americans(not LEOs) that have drawn and fired upon an individual . . . .

There are ZERO people that I personally know who have needed this kind of thing

There are ZERO people that are friends of folks that I personally know who have needed this kind of thing

There are ZERO people that are friends of the friends of people that I personally know who have needed this kind of thing

We all know that the Nightly News would make sure that every case of this type gets plenty of publicity. However in our country of 330,000,000 + Citizens, I only hear about one or two people each year that might have some benefit from this kind of Insurance.

I have USCCA. Like the coverage in case of fire I carry on my home, I pray it's never needed and take all reasonable precautions to avoid that need.

It was strongly endorsed by 2 different local defensive shooting instructors I respect, and one that I follow in print and online. Those endorsements were all separate but similar: "I've looked at many different plans and I pay for this coverage myself." All three mentioned the importance of coverage for travel.

It is not a magic wand that will make problems disappear, it is one of many layers of defense for myself and my family.

In my opinion this is a multi-pronged question

First, I believe it depends on what state/location you are in. For example in California, its likely a good idea given the way things are run, however, in Florida/Texas...it would likely be less of an issue as we have laws protecting us from the "guilty till proven innocent" mentality that is taken when a self defense shooting happens.

Second, circumstances, as with all insurance there is a long list of disqualifiers, qualifiers and so on. Lets take the Wisconsin/Rittenhouse example. The evidence was beyond clear that it was self defense....however had he been found guilty, and had "self defense insurance" it would not have covered him in anyway, shape or form....so what good is that?

Furthermore, I believe most self defense policies typically only covers up to $1 million.....using the above example a lawsuit for defamation and malicious prosecution will net you substantially more than that especially if suing the major outlets who portray you as a bloodthirsty killer.

Frankly if you find a decent plan thats $20 a month, thats $240 a year....not much money today.....however in my opinion a good shoot is a good shoot and 99% of the time the evidence will show that before any large bill is incurred. If that 1% chance of possibly going to trail/lawyer fees and so on is a major concern, then Id say do it.

Generally speaking though, I see no need for additional insurance.

I have USCCA... I attended 2 separates meetings led by Attorneys'. There was no paid endorsements involved. I just cannot rationalize not having insurance as long as I will be carrying a weapon.

I look at it like this...

I can easily afford a few hundred dollars a year for the coverage.

I cannot as easily afford to potentially lay out hundreds of thousands of dollars for a protracted legal defense...criminal or civil.

I worked hard for a comfortable retirement for my wife and myself. It's not worth putting it at risk for a few dollars a week that might be spent renting a movie or buying a sandwich.

I did my due diligence, and picked the company that best represented the coverage I was looking for...with the least number of gotchas. I was also in touch privately with one of the founders over a period of a few weeks before I opted to switch over from coverage I already had with other reputable companies.

YMMV. Each individual will have to weigh the pros and cons for themselves. It's not "one size fits all".

I decided for me it’s worth the 209$ a year I’ll just spend 200$ less on my 1,000$ ammo budget. I’d rather have 200 less rounds of .357 magnum than be on the hook for a lawyer. Plus they had a discount for first year at CCW safe LODS10 so I ended up paying 190 for the first year instead.

They may not be perfect but I can’t afford a lawyer on retainer, I can afford 209$ less in ammo per year. I usually shoot 1,000 rounds a year and can buy that for around 800$ maybe it’s a gimmick but I read the terms a third time just now and felt confident in CCW safe.
