Catalytic converter question-see post 25 for update

My only experience with catalytic converters was a 2002 Buick. At 8 years old and about 60K miles the cat fried and stranded my wife on the highway. Towed to a repair shop, quoted $1300 for replacement. Called several other shops, all wanted $1100-plus.

Local muffler and exhaust shop provided a generic replacement catalytic converter, installed in about an hour with both O-2 sensors replaced for about $375. Repaired vehicle provided another couple years for my wife, then went on to a grandson for several more good years of service.

Apparently there are replacement catalytic converters suitable for many applications (overall dimensions, intake & outlet, capacities, etc), and most commonly seen automobiles can be fitted without resorting to OEM spec parts. Of course, many shops choose to quote repairs only at maximum prices and profits.

Some years back the cat on my ancient Toyota pickup failed. Toyota wanted $700 for the part at a discount. I think I found an aftermarket replacement for slightly over $100, 4 bolt replacement. Was still working fine when I sold the truck several years later.

Caje...go down to the corner drug dealer/parts guy. Put your order in for a replacement cat...under a hundred in 2 nights! I mean days!

Possible discount on any meds you may take too

Update. Well it was sawed not cracked as in some low life tried to steal it  Got it welded up for a C note so it ended well. My daugter shrugged it off by saying, well it's New Orleans you take te good with the bad, at which time I went ape-**** and said NO YOU DON'T TAKE THE BAD ***DAMNIT!!!
You file a *&%^ing police report. I stopped right there because if I continued my thought I would not be considered woke and might be construed as someone to bew afraid of. Now her boyfriend wants to get a gun  Told her fat chance I will give them one until they come down here and demonstrate complete competency and familiarity with the laws concerning self defense. Unfortunately stealing a converter doesn't qualify for use of deadly force.

I guess not!!!! But since that vehicle technically belongs to the wife as it was her dearly departed sweet mother's (otherwise known as the ***** from ****) car I have no idea nor do I want to know.
I find that ignorance is often a soothing salve upon the wounds otherwise inflicted by people who ask my opinion and then ignore it; yet come crying to me to fix whatever itis they did (or didn't) do.
In other words do not ask or tell me anything unless you want me to offer a solution or otherwise direct you on what to do.

What I hate is when someone ask me for my opinion of a car (gun, machine, woman, dog etc) they are thinking about getting. I say anything positive and they end up getting it and from then on I am partly responsible for any problems with it. Same with work on it one time.

Dear old buddy is now responsible for a Nissan Sentra, (I fixed a dent and put tires on it) a Ford Windstar, I replaced the front clip after it hit a deer) an International Scout, I towed home, A Volvo that I replaced a radiator and fan in.
