Cats

I need a cat in this old house, but I spend a bit of time "on the road". Really tough deciding if I ought to get one from the pound and try to settle it here before I go south again. I'm generally only gone for a week at a time and I have volunteers for feeding a cat if I was to get one.....

Tough decision. Make my mind up for me fellers....

Not too unusual for us to leave our cats in the house alone for up to a week. We just put out lots of (dry) food and water, and two large kitty litter pans. They always seem to show their resentment for being left alone when we return.

I have three brother feral slightly tamed full grown black cats. They are awesome.
I took in two more kittens that needed a home. It depends when playtime/romper room starts. Sometimes it's just before bed at 12am. Or at 6am when the three brothers come in, after all five eat. My bed becomes part of the race track. It's ok the three brothers killed every living rodent in the yard. The kittens killed two mice in the house already. They earn there keep.

When I hear a ruckus at night if the dog doesn't bark I know it's the kittens causing trouble.

My poor cat I just put down would jump on my legs claws extended when I'm sleeping. Many nights he scored two points in the field goal kick. In my sleep he was the football. I'm sorry but I had viscous veins in my legs. He never cut one open.

Your lucky, I just earned three new bleedings on my right hand this morning from rubbing Shastas tummy.:o

For a really good cat toy just wad up a cash register receipt into a really tight ball. It is cost free and they will spend untold hours playing with them. They work especially well on hardwood floors.;)

They are a totally renewable source around here because we are at Wallyworld, CVS, Home Depot or some such just about every day.

Empty toilet-paper rolls do nicely too. :D

Our cat meows insistently if his food bowl is less than 3/4 full. He's lean. He just wants that bowl full all the time.

Another cat loved spring door stops in the middle of the night. It never failed. You'd be awakened by a loud BOING sound followed by the sound of a scampering cat. The sounds repeated about once per minute until he got tired of it.

Get a smaller bowl.I had to becuse Shasta did the same thing. Now when she THINKS shes winning--doesnt realise the diff.

We had a couple that would play and chase for hours a wadded up ball of aluminum foil. It had to be about an inch in diameter for the best results. Another likes golf balls!

"Plinking" - When a cat has plenty of dry food and an empty aluminum can that once held food and she plays with the empty can at 5 AM.

If the cat did that at 5AM in our house, I'd start my form of "plinking" but it would be with a .22 cal. rifle!

I "plink" them with a pillow for any undue noise between midnight and 6 a.m.

My cat goes to high ground when the vacuum cleaner comes out. With a big fluffy tail like his, you can't be to careful.

Many think he's a Maine Coon Cat. I think he's just a Domestic Longhair, but his true origins are shrouded in mystery.

Maine Coons

:D Sounds like they have you well trained. You know the saying Dogs want a master Cats want a staff.

FWIW we have 3 very large indoor only male Main Coons and when they get bounding thought the house at night it sounds like a Clydesdale running and can actually shake things a bit.:D

Added--- Actually many Coons are quite vocal and make a lot of different sounds!

We also have three Maine Coons and the amount of noise three light-footed cats can make is truly amazing.

Ol' Duke may be only part Main Coon but he sure has the look of a pure bred except he is slightly smaller. Brisket neck. Buffalo head. Big shoulders and feet. large boned frame.

He loves to talk. His "tone of voice" may be a clue to what he's saying. But he walks around the house constantly talking. when he get's loud he's usually fussin' at one of the other cats.

We have a basket in the living room where we TRY to keep all the cat toys. They all have their favorites. During the night on most nights Duke will bring in 2 or 3 and put them either at the foot of the bed or one my side or on Miss Pam's side on the floor.

When we go into the breakfast room he brings them in there and puts them at our chairs, Talking the whole time he is walking across the living room floor with them in his mouth. One at a time until he has them all in there.

We usually have a "toy round up" every morning after breakfast. We gather up all the ones we can find and put them back in the basket. The others have usually taken out some and scattered then all over the house. Later that night the whole routine begins again.

I have 3 cats. Love em. Im alone most of the time, home and in pretty rough shape, and the cats make my day.
I actually bug them more than they bug me.
They are my buddies and we help each other live a good life.
The pic is bear, she is a good girl.

I taught one of my tamed feral cats to head butt me on my forehead.
He did head butt my coffee cup on the bottom when I was drinking it. I got coffee all over me. Now he's head butting the misses. I can teach him anything. They come to my whistle, they come when I call them. The head butt one jumps up on the chair when I say up. There so smart if we work with them.

This is my herd:

L-R: The Crusher, Chloe Jet and Mayhem. They grew up with a pet door so they're indoor/outdoor, but hang pretty close to the yard and now that it's cooler, they spend more time indoors. Great companions.

Love them all but The Crusher is my boy.

In no particular order I "LIKE" the whole conversation.
I am a "pet" person and have always been.
Dog are good in many ways and cats are special thought they don't necesseraly care.
We had a big 'ol female we called momma kitty-though she never had kittens-but when she walked down the sidewalk, all the dogs went to the other side.
Blessings

This is Harry. He looked like Harry from the movie when he was a kitten. He was my side kick for the entire 2 1/2 years we got to enjoy him. I worked the early shift and went to bed before the DW, Harry would take up point in the hallway and defend me when she came back. Pic is him on his perch in '09 going coast to coast. He loved his walks around the campground each evening on a harness. At home he rode on my shoulder all the time.
