Well then, let's extend an invitation to interested non-members to join the forum. For those visiting the forum and interested in handloading, there are lots of folks willing to share their experience and knowledge. Some members have been loaders for decades and are more than willing to answer your questions, no matter how new you are to rolling your own.

As you may have noticed, this is a hobby where you need to be careful and stay safe. This is a good place to discuss the best way to do things. Lots of folks means lots of opinions for you to work work with.

Please join in the discussions and present your own experiences. No one knows it all and we are interested in sharing information.

I like Pat's suggestion to invite our anonymous guests to join the forum. We have to exercise some self restrain though and make sure we don't use newcomers for target practice. We treat them well often, most of the time I guess, but not always.

Read recent Folterung thread in Ammo for example. I don't know if this new guy really has problems as Erich implied or his grandson likes Lego games or he just heard this word and liked the sound of it. I do know that berating new kid on the block for not willing to discuss his internet handle is not going to help recruit new members for the forum.

Mike

P.S. I noticed that since handejector took the reins, several new moderators were added to the forum. However none of them seem to hang out in the reloading and ammo sections. Perhaps we should petion our new owner to ask one of the cool heads here to serve as our moderator. WDYT?

P.P.S. Actually this is an OT and subject for a thread of it's own. I think I'll open up a poll to see if people think we can benefit from having a moderator for ammo and relo sections.

I had an incident with loading shotgun shells some years ago. Back when I had my farm, me and a couple friends would get together several weekends a month for some clay target shooting practice. I would load us up a bunch of shells and we'd have at it. I was loading # 8 or 9 shot over unique but I don't recall the exact load off hand. It was from published data and it was a pretty hot load. It was working fine in my 870 so I grabbed my stoeger coach gun and figured I'd bust a few targets with it. I hit the targets just fine but when I went to break the gun open to reload, the action was jambed shut. When I finally got it open, there were definitely signs of high pressure. Luckily me and the shotgun both walked away unharmed. I learned real fast that just because a load works fine in 1 gun ......... it may do something entirely different in another gun.

Doug,

Maybe what really should be learned is to use 870s and leave the rest alone.

For some reason unknown to me, my dad used to load 1 1/4 ounce 2 3/4" 12 gauge with 34.0 gr of AL-5. I still have some of those loads and can verify that is the charge he used. If you look in one of the older reloading manuals that has shot shell data. you'll probably notice that is really a 3" load. Regardless, it shoots just fine, if you can stand the recoil, in any 870 we've ever shot it in.

It was a universal load for us that worked on dove, ducks, geese, quail and anything else that was permissible with a shotgun.

Now, I know no one is going to duplicate that load, since Alcan has been out of business for 30 years, so I feel pretty safe in posting the load.

Did it hurt the guns? I don't suppose so, since I just shot dad's 870 a few minutes ago and #1 son has my 870 that also functions just fine. Dad's is a 1968 model and mine is a 1973 model, so they've had plenty of time to show any damage.

While we're on the subject of posting data, how many of you have used brass hulls for 12 gauge? Where did you find any loading data? This is what the product description says.
Magtech Brass Shotshell hulls are ideal for traditional black powder loads. Mix 10 boxes of any gauge to receive case pricing. When choosing wads for brass cases, choose one gauge larger for proper fit: For example, use 11-gauge cards in a 12-gauge brass case. Magtech brass shells use large pistol primers. Firearm Chamber Length=2 3/4". Brass Case Length=2.45". No loading data available at this time. 25 rounds per box 10 boxes per case
Does that stop you from shooting brass hulls?

Ya might have a point there Paul,
The load I was using at that time showed no signs of high pressure in the 870 for whatever reason. It was a pretty darn good trap load too I kept loading it for the 870 ........ I have the data I used written down somewhere around here should I need to load more of them.

Doug,

Just the first part of my previous post was directed to you. The rest was just me rambling with the use of a generic "you".

I figured as much ............ I'll tell ya what that hot load that locked up the stoeger was as soon as I get a chance to look back through my data. Whatever it was ....... the 870's like it fine.
