Changing Taste Buds

I have noticed certain changes in my likes and dislikes. I have been a coffee drinker all of my life. I put the pot on every morning. In the last few months I don't care if I have coffee or not, and go without several days a week. I seemingly don't feel that I miss it.

I am a big seafood fan, but never liked fried scallops or prepared any other way. Now, they are great.

Never touched sweet potatoes. Did not like them. Now I prefer them to white potatoes.

Still won't get near beets or anything I used for bait like mussels or squid:D

Not being an adventurous eater, I remember I was fairly well "lubricated" the first time I tried calamari, many decades ago. It wasn't as repulsive as I thought. My conclusion: "Deep-fried rubber bands."
 
Well into my 20s I wouldn't touch broccoli or cauliflower. Now I'll eat both providing they are not overcooked. I still won't go near Brussels or cooked cabbage, though.

I ate Calamari at a buffet once. I thought they were weird onion rings until the wife informed me that they were octopus....

Radiation incinerated over half my taste buds. It was almost 9 months before I could handle semi-solid foods. It took almost 3 years to reclaim my palate.

For a while all foods tasted like what I imagined Flip-Flop Paté would taste like.

Since then my menu has grown exponentially.

I remember my mother complaining (in her 70's) about "things don't taste the same anymore". I feel I have lost a LOT of taste for, and of, things now also. Coffee used to be a morning necessity!! Panic might ensue if it was not available. I kept a back up coffee maker just in case of failure of #1 maker. Now I can take it or leave it ...no big deal. I can't taste peanut butter anymore as well as a lot of other things. I was recently shocked at a Thai restaurant when I had some red curry shrimp for the first time. The EXPLOSION of flavor was amazing :) I guess spices that were newer to my palate awakened some unused taste buds :) I also remember my mother and step father becoming enamored of baked sweet potatoes. When visiting in Florida with them one time a lot of discussion was devoted to the price, quality, variety, and preparation of sweet potatoes ! I also have gone through through my geriatric "sweet potato" phase. A few years ago I complained to a manager at a restaurant that their "special" ginger house dressing on their cobb salad had no taste at all. Now I realize it was probably just my dead taste buds .... sorry pal :(

Speaking of calamari ..... I once adventurously ordered the "stuffed calamari" at a high end Spanish restaurant in Wash. D.C. My thoughts after choking it down with lots of wine were .... I think I just ate an old piece of bicycle inner tube stuffed with hamburger helper !!

I read an article fairly recently that said people in the US didn't start widely eating squid until the 1980s when someone had the bright idea of calling it, after the Italian, "Calamari." (And frying it.)

Sure enough, it took off. (I like it, too.) Now there's a squid shortage.
 
There are less and less foods that I won't at least choke down once. I will even try things like beets, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving. :eek: I figure I can always wash them down with a couple fingers of bourbon or a big wedge of pecan pie.
BTW, Uummmmm, calamari. Loved it from the first time I had it at a little dive bar on Long Island sound after a productive day of striper fishing.
