What is the purpose of top strap checkering?

Three reasons, most likely:

1- Break up glare on the sighting plane.

2- Give the S&W revolver that first sported it (the Registered Magnum) some extra disctinction, like it needed any more!

3- To thumb their nose at Colt - "Hey! Look at this!"

Interesting post, I have 627-2 6shot/5" that is NOT checkered on the top strap...wonder what thats all about?

Hi,

my 27-3 4". Sorry for the sight change, but my eyesight isn't the best anymore, and this one is my favorite shooter for bullseseye competition (for nearly 25 years now), so it had to be done
