Did anyone that was in Vietnam scrounge or recover any Chinese Communist pistols for your own use? If so, how effective were they?

I had forgotten about the original design: all the TTs I have handled had a safety of some sort installed on the left side of the slide...

Cheers!

P.S. A very powerful round (probably produced in the hundreds of millions?): almost like a 5.7x28 with some real guts? Still being produced today!

Our Pistol Program director was Special Forces in Viet Nam. Once in a while I see him shooting his Type 54 at our range. I asked him if he had the War Trophy papers for it (whatever they are called) and he said he did, when he came home from that tour...but he threw them away after he arrived. I guess I must have shown a "Oh, no--you didn't!" face and he was amused by my reaction. "What the $&!! do I want them papers for!?". I didn't bother explaining :-(

BTW, the Chinese Makarovs and the copies of the 1911A1's they imported in the US in the 80's are high quality pistols!

I don't remember the story, but some elite military group always carried Toks, not just Soviets and Chinese, maybe South Africans. I have a little (very little) personal experience with firing them, I never owned one.

The Chinese Type 54 are very reliable and well made. They are also very powerful. Still in use round the world, even the Ukraine today.
